Reviews Summary

Visitors find Roussanou Monastery to be a beautiful and peaceful nunnery, offering stunning views and impressive architecture that seems carved from the rock. While it's considered one of the more accessible Meteora monasteries, it can get crowded, and a strict dress code is enforced. Photography is not permitted inside.

"Amazing. Meteora is world famous for its six Eastern Orthodox monasteries that are perched atop gigantic rock pillars in the mountains …. certainly a “must see”.
All have been around for some hundreds of years; and it is incredible to imagine that they were built so long ago.
Thirdly, we visited the Holy Monastery of Rousanos. It was beautiful. So calm and peaceful although it can be quite crowded at times. There is a very strict dress code to enter (we came prepared) and some of the monasteries are REALLY hard work to get to. Lots of steps; Lots of rests; Lots of sweat … but we made it."

Norm P.

"A small and wonderful monastery. Just as Agios Stefanos, the other nunnery, it is understandably somewhat stricter on the behavioral code of conduct for visitors.
Also practically a fortress just as much as a place of worship, it was originally accessible via a retractable rope and wood stairway thrown through a small opening defended by narrow openings.
Today it is accessible by a comfortable bridge found at the end of a less tiring ascent. Perhaps the best choice for someone who has very little time and wants to make the best of it."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Construction of Roussanou Monastery

The Holy Monastery of Roussanou, also known as Agia Varvara, dates back to the 14th century. It's believed to have been named after the first hermit-monk who settled on the rock around that period. Unlike some other Meteora monasteries built on separate rock pinnacles, Roussanou is constructed as a single, cohesive building that occupies the entire available surface of its cliff. This unique architectural approach gives the impression that the monastery was organically grown from the rock itself. Instagram+1

Historically, access to such monasteries was often challenging, involving retractable rope and wood stairways. Roussanou was no exception, with a small opening defended by narrow openings. Today, visitors can access it via a more comfortable bridge, making the ascent more manageable. This architectural ingenuity allowed monks and nuns to create a sanctuary high above the world, blending human construction with the dramatic natural landscape. InstagramReddit

Roussanou Monastery is one of the active nunneries in Meteora, meaning it is still inhabited and functioning as a religious site. This adds a layer of living history to the experience, allowing visitors to witness a tradition that has endured for centuries. The monastery is known for its beautiful frescoes and icons, which are a testament to the artistic and spiritual heritage of the region. Instagram+1

The views from each monastery are spectacular, offering different perspectives of the surreal landscape. Many visitors find that visiting multiple monasteries provides a richer appreciation for the dedication and faith of those who built and maintained these sacred spaces. Reddit
