What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors acknowledge the historical significance of the Byzantine Walls of Kastoria, particularly the illuminated round tower. However, many note that only scattered ruins remain, leading to expectations of more substantial fortifications. The lakeside locations offer pleasant walks, but the overall impression is that of historical remnants rather than a fully preserved site.
"Little is salvaged of the once mighty walls of Byzantine Kastoria. To their credit, local authorities have tried to display the little that is left, lighting the impressive round tower as well as some sections of the remaining curtain walls."

"Ruins without any value."
Konstantinos Koskarian
"Only a few sections of the "Byzantine Walls of Kastoria" survive, and their remains are scattered in various parts of the city of Kastoria.
Since the years of Justinian, very strong walls were built on the neck of the peninsula that extends into Lake Kastoria, to fortify the city.
The "Justinian" walls of Kastoria were strengthened in the Middle Byzantine and Late Byzantine years, in order to help better fortify the city.
During the years of Turkish rule, interventions in the Byzantine walls of the city were minimal. At the end of the 19th century, the gradual destruction of parts of the wall of the neck of the peninsula began, in order to construct new buildings.
Today, remains of the wall can be easily found on the northern shore of the lake in the area of the City Hall, next to Van Fleet Square. As well as on the southern shore of the lake, in the area of the Prefecture, next to the Mendrese (Muslim seminary) of Ahmet Pasha.
They are certainly a tourist attraction of the city and we will certainly find them in front of us, on a walk on the northern and southern shores of Lake Orestiada,"
