What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Pefki Gorge is lauded for its stunning natural beauty and rewarding hiking experience, offering breathtaking panoramic views and a charming village destination. While the hike is generally well-marked and manageable, visitors advise wearing sturdy footwear and carrying ample water due to the terrain and potential heat. Some sections require careful navigation, but the overall consensus is that the effort is well worth the spectacular scenery and peaceful atmosphere.
"The hiking trail from Makry Gialos up to the mountain village of Pefki is a beautiful and rewarding experience, perfect for those who enjoy nature and want to explore the local landscape on foot. The trail begins right in town, at White River, and is well-marked from start to finish. Several overview maps are placed along the way, making navigation easy even for first-time visitors.
The first part of the walk follows a quiet, little-used paved road. After a while, you reach a subtle but important fork—this is where the main road starts to slope downhill. At that point, look for a smaller path to your left that climbs uphill. This is the start of the so-called “Panorama Route,” which offers stunning views over the gorge, coastline, and surrounding hills. The scenery from this route is truly breathtaking and makes the ascent to Pefki memorable.
Once you reach the village, you can stop for a drink or a snack at one of the charming tavernas before heading back down. I highly recommend taking the gorge path on the return journey—it offers more shade and cooler conditions, especially on hot summer days.
All in all, this hike combines accessibility, scenic variety, and a real sense of connection to the Cretan landscape. A must-do while in the area."

"Did the loop part, we left the car under the road bridge. Then went through the gorge, following signs (yellow-red) up to the trail intersection next to the water source (no water in July) and a way back via scenic section of the trail, high above the gorge.
Took 2h 30min total. Recommended starting early (we took off at 7:30AM and it was hot on the way back). Good hiking boots, a hat, plenty of water and sunscreen is all you need. Not crowded at all, we did not encounter anyone during the trip."
