Reviews Summary

The stunning panoramic views, especially at sunset, are a major highlight, complemented by the peaceful adjacent graveyard and church. Some reviewers noted a lack of detailed historical information on-site, suggesting prior research enhances the experience.

"Lovely place at sunset. Unfortunately, there are no sign posts explaining the historic background of the castle. You have to look it up on the internet."

Nina Schwarz

"Nice place, beautiful graveyard in the back, great view to the sunset."

Steinar Bøhn

"Perhaps few buildings have seen such a long life span such as this one. Though greatly modified from its original form, it seems to have an uninterrupted term of service from antiquity to the present.
Its beginnings can be traced way back to the classical period, though it would be far from surprising if extensive excavation reveals even older origins, as we well know of other locations, especially citadels of ancient Greece. Many an acropolis has been found to be built over the palace of a Mycenean Anax, and many of these, in turn, have been proved to have been erected upon some Neolithic Megaron.
But, let us stay with what we have. The ancient structures were still in use throughout the Byzantine days. Within the mind-numbing 1100-year run of this empire, the 7th and the 10th centuries seem most likely periods of extensive rebuilding of the site.
In the 14th century, the Genoese renovated and made modifications of their own, well enough to let it continue in service by the Ottomans without significant servicing requirements.
During the Greek war of independence, it was renovated once more and served as an administrative center as well as a home for Lykourgos Logothetes, a local leader of the age. It still offers us services as a museum to this day.
Unfortunately, this impossible run has not received due credit. Most perceive its most recent renovation as its origin and seem to overlook all that precedes this.
It is very easy to visit by and can be easily combined with other attractions, cultural or recreational, both of which Samos has in abundance."
