"The Cathedral of Guatemala City is the Archdiocese of Guatemala. It is officially called the Holy Church Cathedral Metropolitan Basilica of Santiago de Guatemala. The construction of the building began in 1783. The cathedral is located in the Central Park Area. Visitors can come inside and enjoy its many places to sit, including the main church, a few chapels, and small individual areas dedicated to different saints/ historic events. The building has a number of works of art and religious carvings. A large marble alter with four large marble columns is located pass the main seating area. The architectural style of the building includes baroque and classical styles since the work on the cathedral continued during different times as part of the cathedral were gradually added. It suffered from both earthquakes in 2017 and 1976 and was reconstructed over time. Today this damage is hardly visible. The entrance is FREE and it is commonly well attended between masses. It is a nice visit which could take depending on how much time visitors are willing to spend and is highly recommended."
