"This is a wonderful church and just looks beautiful from the outside and the inside. The facade matches the Fisherman’s Bastion which makes the entire structure look even more majestic. The walls within the church are beautifully painted. When visiting the church you have the opportunity to visit the top of the tower. It will take you some effort to get there. The view from the top is amazing. From the view of the parliament, the Fisherman’s Bastion to the beautiful ornate roof tiles, you will get to see it all. I highly recommend visiting this sight and recommend purchasing the tickets ahead of time."

"We went here as the final stop on a tour and they saved the best time last. The city has so many beautiful buildings and this is certainly one of them. There is a great deal of history here as well as the space.
I am not a religious person and I've been to a lot of basilicas, cathedrals and churches since I began visiting Europe some twenty years ago. I've become far more particular about what I visit after having been to so many. This was certainly worth the visit."

Thomas Winslett

"The castle is a stunning historical site with incredible views over the Danube and the city. The architecture is unique and the atmosphere is full of history and charm. Walking through the courtyards and along the castle walls is a magical experience. Inside, the museums offer a deep dive into Hungarian art and history. Whether you visit by day or night, the scenery is unforgettable"

A Glimpse into Matthias Church's Rich History

Matthias Church, officially the Church of Our Lady of Buda, boasts a history stretching back to the 13th century. While its foundations are ancient, the current structure largely dates from the 14th century, showcasing a magnificent Gothic style. It earned its name from King Matthias Corvinus, who married here and commissioned significant renovations. The church has witnessed pivotal moments in Hungarian history, notably serving as the coronation church for the last two Habsburg kings of Hungary, Franz Joseph I and Charles IV. Instagram+1

Over the centuries, the church has undergone various transformations, including periods of Ottoman occupation where it was converted into a mosque. The extensive 19th-century restoration, led by architects Frigyes Schulek and Imre Steindl, aimed to restore its medieval Gothic splendor, adding the distinctive colorful tile roof and ornate spires that are visible today. This restoration is a key reason for its current breathtaking appearance. Instagram

Today, Matthias Church stands not only as a testament to architectural evolution but also as a vibrant spiritual center. It continues to host religious services, concerts, and welcomes visitors eager to explore its storied past and stunning beauty. Its location atop Buda Castle Hill makes it a central point for understanding Budapest's historical narrative. TikTokReddit
