"Interesting location with a close by free parking to conveniently access two waterfalls: Barnafoss and Hraunfossar. Crowds in mid-September were limited making the visit very enjoyable. Visiting nearby Barnafoss and admiring the water sculpturing the rocks and flowing towards Hraunfossar was amazing and highly recommend the upper vantage point over Hraunfossar crossing the bridge facing Barnafoss. Hraunfossar is a very charming waterfall which several trickling little waterfalls setup on a considerable width. It was our first day but it kept a noticeable impression even though we visited several impressive and larger waterfalls during our 15 day visit. Highly recommended a relaxing 1 hour visit."

Kristian Cini

"Two stunning waterfalls that look absolutely amazing. The scenery is breathtaking and, unlike many popular spots, it was not crowded which made the visit even more special. A peaceful and unforgettable experience well worth the stop."

Martin Sić

"It’s really worth it. These waterfalls coming from the lava walls are really astonishing. We went in fall and the colour made the landscape really beautiful. There’s another smaller waterfall (named the children’s waterfall) just 3 minutes walk from here."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geological Marvel of Hraunfossar

Hraunfossar, translating to 'Lava Falls,' is a truly exceptional natural phenomenon. Unlike typical waterfalls that plunge from a cliff, Hraunfossar's water seeps directly from the porous Hallmundarhraun lava field. This ancient lava flow, formed by volcanic eruptions under the Langjökull glacier, creates a stunning, nearly kilometer-long series of delicate cascades. The water, originating from underground springs, appears to magically emerge from the rock face, creating a unique, lace-like effect as it flows into the Hvítá River. Instagram+1

The visual spectacle is further enhanced by the striking turquoise hue of the Hvítá River, which contrasts beautifully with the dark, rugged lava formations. This distinctive color is a result of glacial meltwater and mineral content. While the water color can vary with the seasons and snowmelt, it consistently adds to the ethereal beauty of the location. Instagram+1

Visitors often describe the experience as surreal and mesmerizing. The sheer width and gentle nature of the falls, combined with the unusual origin, make Hraunfossar a must-see for anyone interested in Iceland's unique geology and natural wonders. It's a testament to the powerful and creative forces of nature. Reddit

Exploring Barnafoss: The 'Children's Falls'

Just a short walk from Hraunfossar lies Barnafoss, meaning 'Children's Falls.' This waterfall presents a starkly different, yet equally captivating, spectacle. Instead of gentle cascades, Barnafoss is characterized by its powerful rapids that surge through a narrow, rocky gorge. The water here is visibly more turbulent, carving its way through the ancient basalt with impressive force. InstagramReddit

The name 'Children's Falls' is steeped in local folklore, with tales of children falling into the rapids and drowning. While the exact origin of the name is debated, it adds a layer of mystique to the powerful natural display. The dramatic rock formations and the churning water create a visually dynamic scene that complements the serene beauty of Hraunfossar. Reddit

Visiting both Hraunfossar and Barnafoss in succession offers a comprehensive understanding of the diverse ways water interacts with Iceland's volcanic landscape. The proximity of these two distinct waterfalls makes them an ideal pairing for a short, impactful exploration. Instagram
