Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Barkana Falls for its breathtaking natural beauty and the exhilarating trek through the Western Ghats. The secluded ambiance offers a peaceful escape. However, the challenging accessibility, lack of facilities, and potential for slippery trails during monsoon are noted drawbacks.

"Dodda Mane of Agumbe where some episodes of Malgudi Days were shot. Everything is beautiful here in Agumbe - Nature, animals, people, homes. Agumbe is located in Tirthahalli taluk in the Malnad region of Karnataka. Shankar Nag and Devraj, the director and art director for Malgudi Days, chose Agumbe as Malgudi to bring to life "Swami and Friends" and "Malgudi Days" and over the years painfully constructed every little detail in the fictitious town of Malgudi; right from hand carts, schools, small dwellings. Even donkeys, that were not present in Agumbe, were brought from elsewhere. The 100 plus year old home, Dodda Mane (meaning Big Home in Kannada) at Agumbe was were Naga and Maha kanjus episodes were shot. Decades ago when transport was few and far apart, Dodda Mane used to be an en route stopover for travelers from Koppa to Sringeri.

"My solo visit to Barkana Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in India, was an exhilarating experience. Nestled deep within the lush Western Ghats near Agumbe, the journey to the falls was as thrilling as the view itself. This natural wonder is a testament to the unspoiled beauty of Karnataka's landscapes.

The Good:
Breathtaking Views: The cascading waters plunge from a height of over 850 feet, creating a majestic sight. Surrounded by dense forests, the setting is truly enchanting.
Scenic Trek: Reaching the viewpoint requires a trek through the Agumbe Reserve Forest. The trail, filled with chirping birds and the occasional wildlife sighting, is a treat for adventure enthusiasts.
Secluded Ambiance: Unlike more commercialized tourist spots, Barkana Falls remains relatively untouched, offering a tranquil and immersive experience in nature.
Proximity to Agumbe: Being close to the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station and other attractions like the Agumbe Sunset Viewpoint, the falls are a perfect addition to any nature-lover’s itinerary.
The Challenges:
Accessibility: The trek to the falls can be challenging, especially for those not accustomed to long walks or uneven terrain. Proper footwear is a must.
Weather Dependence: The falls are best viewed during or just after the monsoon season (June to November), when the water flow is at its peak. However, the trail can become slippery and muddy during heavy rains.
Limited Facilities: There are no food stalls, restrooms, or other amenities near the falls. Visitors need to plan accordingly.
Restricted Access: Being part of a reserve forest, certain areas may require prior permission from the forest department.
Suggestions for Future Visitors:
Best Time to Visit: Plan your trip during the post-monsoon months (September to November) to see the falls in their full glory.
Trekking Tips: Wear sturdy shoes, carry plenty of water, and pack some light snacks. A small first-aid kit is also advisable.
Guided Tour: Consider hiring a local guide to navigate the trail safely and learn more about the region’s flora and fauna.
Eco-conscious Travel: Avoid littering and respect the pristine environment. Carry back any waste you generate.
Combine with Other Spots: Visit nearby attractions like Jogigundi Falls, Kundadri Hill, or the Agumbe Sunset Viewpoint to make the most of your trip.
Final Thoughts:
Barkana Falls is a hidden gem for those who love nature, adventure, and offbeat destinations. The trek, though challenging, is rewarding, offering stunning views and a sense of achievement. For solo travelers like me, it was a memorable experience of connecting with the raw beauty of the Western Ghats.

Whether you’re an avid trekker, a nature photographer, or simply someone seeking a peaceful retreat, Barkana Falls is worth adding to your travel list."

"Been there in first week of Jan. Entry fee of Rs 100/- per pax was collected at the road, which is deviating from fork near Annapoorani Hotel. Per car there’s a fee of Rs 30/-. Was a lonely drive through out. After a while on right side saw a deviation with a notice showing to Jogi Gundi view. During my trip the entry was locked at the barrier, so had to drop that visit from my plan. Further drive on the tar road ends and there turn right in mud road for a kilometre to reach road Barrier. Park and cross the road barrier and start walk in wide mud path ( wide enough for a truck to pass). Walk was linear easy gradients , breeze through the forest may be just less than 02 Kilometres. Lonely Path ends at a grilled fencing , which face the falls long away. Very scenic to see water falling from great heights and mesmerising view. Layers of mountains surrounded and nothing more than max 20 minutes to spend there. Enroute as we were happily nearing the parking lot, saw a large group of gun toting commandos in fatigues, patrolling to check naxals presence. That news definitely ran a chill down the spine on the risk what had gone through. Over all view is If you’re on tight timelines you wouldn’t miss much if you avoid this view point visit spending nearly 03 hours"
