The highlight was entering the government chamber: no photos are allowed for security reasons, but the moment we stepped inside was breathtaking. I think everyone audibly gasped.
Chandigarh may be a relatively small city of about 1.5 million people, but it holds one of the world’s greatest modernist masterpieces of public infrastructure, still in use today. The tour itself is free, which is remarkable, though I almost wish they charged tourists, perhaps 1000 rupees for foreigners, so the income could support the upkeep of the public spaces, the visitor centre and promotion of the city for tourists. Longer tours of different areas at a higher rate, or even a well curated small gift shop with books and design objects, could also provide valuable revenue. I would have happily contributed. Nevertheless this place is special and the tour was brilliant.
You do need to book in advance (something we hadn’t realised), but after emailing, we received a quick response and permission to join. I feel genuinely honoured to have visited, and it was absolutely worth making the trip to Chandigarh - what a brilliant city almost unheard of outside of India."

"This is a welcome addition for many of the locals who may never have seen the very discreetly done wonderful work that has put Chandigarh as part of the UNESCO world heritage list. Although I visited in sweltering weather, try scheduling a spring/autumn/winter visit to see a spectacular part of the city. Entry free but by appointment as a lot of this area isn’t open to public and you need to provide ID proof."
