"The monsoon trek was a truly refreshing experience. The weather was just perfect – cool breeze, light drizzle, and mist in the air made the entire trail feel magical. The greenery all around during the monsoon was stunning, and the views from different points along the way kept us motivated to keep going. The sound of rain, the fresh air, and the peaceful surroundings gave the trek a very calming vibe.
The trek itself was a bit difficult in some parts because of the slippery stones and uphill climb, but overall it was not too tough and completely manageable. With a little care and the right shoes, it becomes an enjoyable challenge. Going with friends made it even better – we laughed, supported each other, and shared snacks along the way, which turned the whole journey into a memorable outing.

"The Torna Fort trek is a popular, moderately difficult hike near Pune that offers adventure, stunning views, and historical significance. The trek starts from the base village of Velhe and leads to Torna Fort, the highest hill fort in the Pune district, which was the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Moderate. While suitable for beginners with good fitness, the trail involves steep ascents, rocky terrain, and a final challenging rock patch.
The ascent from Velhe is about 5 km and takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. The total trek, including exploring the fort, takes 5 to 7 hours.
From Pune's Swargate Bus Station, you can take a state transport bus that goes to Velhe. You can drive to Velhe via NH48 and State Highway 65. The village has wide enough roads for cars and provides paid parking.
The initial part of the trail is a tar road leading from the Velhe Police Station.
After crossing a bridge, the trail becomes a straightforward hike on a mix of loose rock and mud.
The final section is a steep, rocky patch with an incline of 60 to 70 degrees that requires careful negotiation.
Once at the top, you are rewarded with panoramic vistas and a chance to explore the fort's ancient temples and structures.
In Monsoon (June–September) The fort is at its most beautiful, with lush green landscapes, mist-covered trails, and cascading waterfalls. The trail can be slippery and challenging during this season.
In Winter (October–February): Considered the ideal time to trek. The weather is cool and pleasant, and the clear skies offer excellent visibility of the surrounding Sahyadri ranges."

"The Torna Fort trek is a great choice for a day trip, especially after the monsoon when the trail is covered in yellow and pink wildflowers. The moderately challenging hike offers rewarding views and a peaceful atmosphere. We went on September 13th, and it was refreshingly uncrowded. We started at 11 a.m. and reached the top by 12:45 p.m., just as it started to rain, which was a beautiful experience.
The last part of the climb has monkeys that might try to take things from your pockets or bags, so be careful. The summit has panoramic, peaceful views—perfect for spending a lot of time. Remember to be on the lookout for snakes, bring your own food, and help keep the area clean. Overall, it's a memorable trek with stunning scenery and beautiful flora."

The Trek to Torna Fort: A Journey of Adventure
This challenging ascent is what makes Torna a popular destination for those seeking a moderate to difficult trek. The path leading down to Zunjar Machi is also notable for its rock-cut steps, which can become very slippery when wet, especially during the monsoon season. Due to these conditions, sturdy trekking shoes with excellent grip are absolutely essential. Many trekkers recommend carrying trekking poles for added stability and support throughout the climb.
Despite the physical demands, the trek is immensely rewarding. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit, coupled with the breathtaking views, makes the effort worthwhile. The journey itself is an integral part of the experience, offering a chance to connect with nature and test one's endurance.
Historical Significance of Torna Fort
At an altitude of approximately 4,603 feet (1,403 meters), Torna Fort, or Prachandagad (meaning 'massive fort'), stands as the highest hill fort in the Pune district. Its massive size and commanding presence over the surrounding landscape underscore its military significance. Exploring the fort's ruins, including bastions like Budhla Machi and Zunjar Machi, ancient temples such as the Mengai Devi temple, and historical structures like the Kothi and Konkan gates, offers a tangible connection to the past.
The fort's capture by Shivaji Maharaj was not just a military victory but a symbolic act of defiance and ambition. It inspired further conquests and laid the groundwork for the Maratha Empire's expansion. Visiting Torna Fort is thus an opportunity to walk in the footsteps of history and appreciate the courage and vision of its founders.
Experiencing Torna Fort in Monsoon
However, the monsoon also presents unique challenges for trekkers. The trails can become extremely slippery due to heavy rainfall, making the ascent and descent more difficult and potentially dangerous. The rock-cut steps, in particular, require extreme caution. It's crucial to be well-prepared with appropriate gear, including waterproof clothing and sturdy, high-grip trekking shoes, to navigate these conditions safely.
Despite the added difficulty, many find the monsoon trek to be the most rewarding. The vibrant colors, the sound of rain, and the cool, fresh air create a deeply immersive and memorable experience. For those who enjoy a bit more adventure and are prepared for the elements, the monsoon trek to Torna Fort is an unforgettable journey.
