Reviews Summary

Visitors find Rana Kumbha Palace to be a historically rich and evocative ruin within Chittorgarh Fort. Its sheer scale and the compelling legends of Rani Padmini and Panna Dhai are highlights, though its ruined state means a guide is crucial for a full appreciation. Some caution against misleading local transport operators.

"Rana Kumbha Palace is a very old and partly damaged structure inside Chittorgarh Fort. It’s open from 9 AM to 6 PM, and the visit takes about 10–30 minutes. The palace offers a beautiful view of the fort city and gives a true feel of ancient Rajput architecture.
Built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century, this palace is linked to Rani Padmini’s Johar and Meera Bai’s devotion to Lord Krishna. Though in ruins today, it still reflects the royal glory and sacrifice of Chittorgarh’s brave past."

"Rana Kumbha Palace (Chittorgarh Fort) Review
The Rana Kumbha Palace is one of the most substantial and historically dense monuments within the Chittorgarh Fort. While it is largely a complex of ruins, its sheer size and the profound legends associated with it make it an unmissable part of your visit.
1. The Scale and Architecture (The Ruins)
Largest Structure: This palace is the largest monument in the Chittorgarh Fort complex, revealing the massive scale and opulence it once held.
Architectural Style: Built predominantly with unplastered sandstone, the palace is a fine example of early Rajput architecture, featuring two grand entryways (the Suraj Pol and Tripolia Gate), spacious courtyards, and a series of interconnected buildings. Look for the remnants of its canopied balconies and detailed stone work.
The Atmosphere: The palace's current ruined state actually adds to its dramatic and imposing feel. Walking through the fragmented walls and chambers evokes a strong sense of a bygone, powerful era.
2. The Historical Legends and Key Spots
The palace is a focal point for some of the most heart-wrenching and heroic stories in Rajput history, which a guide will help bring to life:
The Jauhar Spot: It is believed that the vast underground cellars (now blocked) beneath the palace complex were the location where Rani Padmini and other royal women performed Jauhar (mass self-immolation) during the 1303 siege by Alauddin Khilji. This area is highly significant for its somber historical weight.
The Birthplace of Udai Singh: The palace is associated with the incredible sacrifice of Panna Dhai, the nurse who saved the life of infant prince Udai Singh (the future founder of Udaipur) by sacrificing her own son.
Residence of Saints and Kings: The palace was home to the legendary Bhakti poetess Princess Meerabai (the Meera Temple is nearby) and, of course, the great warrior Maharana Kumbha, who renovated and enlarged the original structure built by Bappa Rawal.
Inner Buildings: Within the sprawling ruins, you can identify the stables for horses and elephants, the Zanana Mahal (women's quarters), the Diwan-i-Aam (hall of public audience), the Shiva Temple, and the Nau Lakha Bhandar (royal treasury building).
3. Visitor Experience and Tips
Immersion: Since it is mostly ruins, your experience heavily relies on a knowledgeable guide to narrate the associated legends and point out the significant spots (like the supposed path to the Jauhar cellars or the Meerabai section).
Location within the Fort: The palace is located early in the fort itinerary, near the main gates and close to the Fateh Prakash Palace Museum and the Vijay Stambh (Victory Tower).
Light and Sound Show: A light and sound show is hosted in the evening nearby, which uses the history of the fort, including the Rana Kumbha Palace, to tell the story of Chittorgarh."

"Historically important building to visit. Now its all ruins but one can imagine the vastness and beauty of the palace then. Fort campus is neatly maintained. However, beware of local auto guys as they charge hefty amount to show the nearby monuments by bluffing that all the monuments are about 17km away and it will take 3 to 4 hrs by auto. All major buildings are just within 1 km and all young people should be able to walk between them very easily, even along with kids."
