What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Cotton University is lauded for its deep historical roots and heritage architecture, offering a glimpse into Assam's educational past. While the library and campus grounds are appreciated, some reviews highlight concerns regarding outdated infrastructure, administrative issues, and limited placement opportunities, particularly for technical courses. It remains a significant institution for those valuing history and accessible higher education.
"Heritage & History
Established originally as Cotton College in May 1901 by Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the institution became a Heritage Institution and later evolved into Cotton University in 2017.
The Panbazar campus is steeped in history—spanning nearly 12 acre in central Guwahati—featuring century‑old structures like the Chemistry block, Arts building, and Principal’s Bungalow, preserved via UGC-funded restoration projects.
📍 Campus Overview
The university encompasses 39.82 acres across three campuses: Panbazar (~25 acres), Bongora (~47 acres), and Roopnagar (~5 acres).
Facilities include multiple academic blocks, a grand auditorium, museums, sports complex, canteens, conference halls, and the Dr. Suryya Kumar Bhuyan Library, one of Northeast India’s oldest and most extensive, with over 130 000 volumes including Braille materials and theses.
Academics & Faculty
Faculty members are generally qualified and supportive. Ratings vary, but many reviewers gave 3–4 out of 5 for quality of teaching and curriculum relevance.
Some students reported a low faculty-to-student ratio (~20:1) and noted that internal exam formats emphasize average grading, making scoring manageable.
Curriculum is moderate in difficulty—suitable for students focusing on competitive exams (UGC NET, state PSCs).
Hostels & Student Life
Accommodation includes five boys’ hostels and three girls’ hostels, with options for twin or triple sharing and CCTV security. Fees are economical—around ₹9,500–10,000/year.
Hostel life is reportedly strict—structured routines, uniform requirements, mandatory prayers, and designated play-time meant to foster discipline, though some students find it intense.
Student clubs (e.g. Codebytes), academic fests, cultural weeks like “Abege,” debates, drama, and other extracurricular opportunities make campus life vibrant for many.
Placements & Scholarships
Placement support is limited. 2022 placement figures were low: 13 UG and 95 PG students placed, with average annual salary around ₹4.5 L (UG) and ₹3.6 L (PG).
The placement cell has been making improvements in recent years, with growing but gradual corporate engagement.
Multiple scholarships are available—from Assam state merit scholarships to UGC/AICTE programs and schemes for North Eastern students, helping academically strong and economically constrained learners.
Infrastructure & Accessibility
Infrastructure combines heritage charm with modern amenities—central library, sports complex, labs, canteen, auditorium. However, some facilities are outdated or under renovation.
The university faces challenges regarding accessibility: inadequate walkways, hazardous pavements, and limited accessible transport for visually impaired or specially-abled students. Advocacy is underway for improvements such as dedicated e-rickshaws and tactile pathways.
Cotton University remains an institution of historical prestige and academic heritage in Assam. It offers accessible higher education, cultural vitality, and cost-effective hostel life. However, prospective students should be aware of its limited placement record, mixed infrastructure quality, and recent concerns regarding faculty misconduct and campus discipline. Those aiming for competitive exam readiness, cultural participation, or scholarships for financial support may find a good fit here—but realistic expectations are key.
Thanks!"

"Oldest College in entire Northeast India! Established in 1901 by Sir Henry Cotton! It is one of the most reputed and topmost college for higher education in Northeast India and especially in the state of Assam.
I did BCA from here, honest opinion not recommended, very average education for technical courses. But good for Higher Secondary and degrees like B.A. B.Sc. etc."
