Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Urvai Gate approach to Gwalior Fort for its breathtaking scenic beauty and the spiritual ambiance of the ancient Jain rock-cut statues. The winding road offers a memorable ascent, though the narrowness and lack of a separate footpath require caution. It's considered a highly rewarding and immersive way to reach the fort.

"During my visit to Gwalior Fort from IIITM Gwalior, I entered through the Urvai Gate (उरवाई गेट) — one of the most scenic and memorable approaches to the fort. The uphill drive or trek through this route is absolutely breathtaking, with winding roads carved into the rocky hillside, surrounded by lush greenery and occasional glimpses of the grand fort walls towering above. Early in the morning, the air felt cool and fresh, the sound of birds echoed through the valley, and the golden light gradually revealed the fort’s massive stone ramparts — it was pure magic. The Urvai Gate itself stands strong and majestic, with a sense of timelessness that hints at the fort’s long and storied history. Along the way, there are ancient Jain rock-cut statues on the cliffs — serene and beautifully sculpted — that add to the spiritual and artistic aura of the path. The climb through Urvai Gate offers not just a physical ascent but also a slow, peaceful immersion into the heritage of Gwalior. Reaching the fort after that beautiful uphill journey felt truly rewarding, making this route one of the most memorable parts of my visit — a perfect blend of natural beauty, history, and quiet reflection."

"The place itself is filled of so many stories and history.
You need already two days to visit properly and also experience the light and sound show.
It better to google and do your own research rather than taking a guide.
But if you want to listen to local stories guide is recommended.
The people there and the staff are very family.
If you want to go through car inside the fort then Urvai gate is recommended.
Also you should have your water bottle and spare change for the tickets."

"If you take the walk from the fort to Urvai Gate (or the other way round), you will see some very interesting historic sculptures.

Urvai Gate is where you will reach if you travel by auto or cycle rickshaw. Cabs will usually charge extra to take you to the top - but they can indeed take you there. Bikes can go too.

The walk downhill is about 20 minutes and the walk uphill would be 30-50 minutes. The biggest downside is that there is no footpath or walkway and you will have to walk on the same road as the cars. Traffic is controlled though as it moves only in one direction at any given time."
