Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect these lions and their habitat. By visiting responsibly and supporting local conservation initiatives, you contribute to the survival of this iconic species. The Girnar Nature Safari is a popular way to try and spot these elusive creatures.
Monsoon Magic and Natural Beauty
Beyond the monsoon, the sanctuary boasts a diverse ecosystem with rolling hills and dense forests. The Girnar Hills themselves are a significant landmark, offering scenic views. Understanding the Sanctuary's Geography and History
The sanctuary's forest area, locally known as 'Dungar,' was once part of a larger ecosystem that included Gir National Park. However, urbanization and agricultural expansion have led to its isolation. Today, it stands as a compact patch of forested habitat, covering approximately 178.8 km². Administratively, it falls under the Junagadh Forest Division.
Recent developments include the inclusion of the New Jesal sanctuary, expanding the forest area significantly. This expansion aims to bolster conservation efforts, particularly for the Asiatic lion, making the region a larger and more robust wildlife corridor.
