Gouripur house @ Kalimpong Here in this house Gurudev had spent extended holidays on at least four occasions between April, 1938 and September, 1940. It was also here that he was taken critically ill in September, 1940. This was to be his final sickness, from which he never fully recovered. His passing on August 7, 1941, followed upon that bout of illness. This house gifted us some of Rabindranat...

Once majestic with all its past glory - the Gouripur House in Kalimpong, now stands dilapidated; almost in ruins. This used to be a summer retreat for Rabindranath Tagore, where he had also recited the poem ‘Jonmodin’, for All India Radio. Possibly the nostalgia or the bitter-sweet feeling or perhaps even the overall hauntingly beautiful aura around, prompted me to sing out loud, one of my favour...

Reviews Summary

Gouripur House is a place of immense historical and literary significance, deeply connected to Rabindranath Tagore. While visitors appreciate its rich past and the serene location, many are disheartened by its dilapidated state and the slow pace of restoration. The house evokes a sense of nostalgia and melancholy, with some expressing concern for its preservation.

"Rabindranath Tagore used to live here once. But the building is in dilapidated state now and is being repaired by the Government. On road there should be some board mentioning the way to the house. The building is at a superb position on the hill with a serenity of the Nature."

Sukanta Biswas

"I give this place a five-star rating for its historical value. However, I am saddened to see that the government is not maintaining this place. As a foreigner, it is disheartening to see that more than half of the house is occupied, and a new door has been installed on the ground floor, serving as someone's home. I am really worried that this historically significant building will be destroyed. I have heard that if an Indian occupies a government property for ten years, it becomes theirs. But I am concerned that they will not maintain it as they do not understand its value. Is there anyone who can help and contact the government? This is a good thing for the local people too, as if it becomes a tourist spot, the nearby residents can also earn some money. But without protection, as a foreigner, I came all the way here, bought a ticket, and only then saw the history. If it is not maintained, it will only be forgotten. People should be aware of such behavior."

"Rabindranath Tagore's Gouripur House in West Bengal's Kalimpong district, where the nobel laureate stayed from 1983 to 1940 . Currently PWD started renovation work.
Tagore wrote the poem "Janmodin" (birthday) sitting at this house located on the Upper Cart Road in the Durbindara area in Kalimpong district in 1938. The property was gifted to Tagore by Brajendrakishore Roy Chowdhury, the zamindar of Gouripur in Mymensingh (now in Bangladesh). The poet went to Gouripur in 1938 and stayed there till 1940. His health condition was poor and was advised by doctors to spend some days in the mountains."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Literary Legacy of Gouripur House

Gouripur House is intrinsically linked to the life and work of Rabindranath Tagore, India's first Nobel laureate in literature. He frequented this serene location in Kalimpong between 1938 and 1940, finding solace and inspiration amidst the hills. It was here that he penned significant poems and, notably, broadcast his poem 'Janmadin' (Birthday) for All India Radio, a moment that cemented the house's place in literary history. InstagramReddit+1

The house's historical importance is amplified by the fact that it was a gift from the zamindars of Gouripur, Brajendrakishore Roy Chowdhury, to Tagore. This gesture underscores the deep respect and admiration Tagore commanded. The poet's final years were marked by declining health, and his stays at Gouripur House were partly for recuperation in the salubrious mountain air. InstagramReddit

Despite its profound historical and cultural significance, the house has unfortunately fallen into a state of disrepair over the years, exacerbated by damage during the Gorkhaland Movement. While restoration efforts are underway, the current condition serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges in preserving such heritage sites. Reddit

Navigating the Current State of Gouripur House

Visitors to Gouripur House should be prepared for its current dilapidated condition. While the structure still evokes a sense of its former grandeur, many parts are in ruins, and some sections may even be occupied. This reality can be a stark contrast to the romanticized image of a poet's retreat. InstagramReddit+1

The ongoing renovation efforts by the government are a positive step, but progress has been described as slow. This means that while you might see signs of repair, the house may not look as pristine as one might hope. It's crucial to approach the visit with an understanding that you are witnessing a site in transition, a blend of historical remnants and ongoing preservation work. Reddit+1

Despite its state, the house retains a unique atmosphere. The presence of two camphor trees planted by Tagore himself adds a tangible connection to the past. Many visitors find the melancholic beauty and the historical resonance of the place to be deeply moving, even in its current condition. Reddit
