What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Athangudi tiles are celebrated for their unique beauty and traditional craftsmanship, offering a distinctive aesthetic. However, many customers have reported significant issues with order fulfillment, including long delays, incorrect designs, and poor communication, especially when ordering remotely. Careful planning and in-person visits are strongly advised to ensure a positive experience.
"Never fall for the trap.. he says he has already prepared you tiles and takes complete payment in advance.. but never delivers on time.. an No response for the Calls after receiving the full amount.. it's very disturbing since we ordered from far place.. and finally they sent the wrong material now they don't want to change.. and they don't even answer the call... They are cheaters."

"The Worst experience ever in my life!!!!
I have ordered Aathangudi tiles in this firm just before lockdown times, paid 50% money and it took nearly eight to nine months to get the tiles, its Ok!
When it delivered I have noticed the number of tiles was less than the number I have ordered and I have informed the issue to Mr. Raja. But his response was little bit harsh. Anyway they recognized the mistake later and rectified by sending remaining tiles in another vehicle, good!
The very next day they have send their "EXPERT" workers to the site. They talked like decades of experienced experts in Aathangudi tile laying profession. One self-claimed contractor among them was leading the team. Interestingly they don't have the basic tools, we have arranged tile cutter and measurement channel, its Ok!
The tile laying started in a fine morning. I have noticed they are in a big hurry to complete the work ASAP. The most sad thing is they have not even poured a cup of water after laying the tiles. Water is very essential for the proper setting of cement, is a basic science. I have shown them many videos, but the EXPERTS told me it is not needed!!! Later on I understood the fact that the so-called Contractor wants to reduce the number of working days to maximize profit. So he skipped water treatment process!!! This caused budge of tiles later in many areas and we sought help from local tile laying workers!
These experts have handled the tiles with no care, the surface was covered with cement and not cleaned the tiles in time. In the last day they have "SHINED" the tiles with liters of coconut oil , covered the surface with rise bran instead of rice husk and everything imaged as fine!!!!!!!
Finally the result was heart breaking!!!! (see the below pics). After two months we recognized that we were cheated by those "EXPERTS". It took more than three months to clean the tiles to an average level. But still it looks like 'OLD tiles without any proper care'. We don't know whether the issue was with the manufacturer or the workers!!!
One thing I would like to tell you is that we have many other durable and finished products in the market for flooring, but we have chosen Aathangudi tiles because we believe in sustainable development and also to promote labor-intensive products, means there is a politics behind it. Try to understand it... Give better Service!"

The Art of Athangudi Tile Making
The beauty of Athangudi tiles lies in their individuality. No two tiles are exactly alike, giving floors and walls a distinctive, organic character. They are often chosen for their aesthetic appeal and their connection to traditional Indian architecture, particularly in the grand mansions of the Chettinad region. However, their handmade nature also means they require careful handling during installation and maintenance to ensure their longevity and preserve their unique charm.
While the aesthetic is highly praised, potential buyers should be aware of the challenges highlighted in customer reviews. Issues such as production delays, incorrect orders, and communication problems after payment have been reported. This underscores the importance of visiting the workshop in person, verifying designs and quantities, and understanding payment and delivery terms thoroughly before committing to a purchase.
Navigating Orders and Avoiding Pitfalls
To mitigate these risks, the consensus from traveler experiences and reviews strongly advises visiting the workshops in person. This allows you to personally select colors and patterns, confirm quantities, and establish a direct rapport with the artisans. It also provides an opportunity to gauge the workshop's reliability and professionalism firsthand.
If an in-person visit isn't feasible, exercise extreme caution. Opt for phased payments, clearly document all agreed-upon specifications in writing, and seek recommendations for trusted workshops. Be wary of offers that seem too good to be true, and always prioritize clear communication and verifiable delivery timelines.
