Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently impressed by Cheraman Juma Masjid's historical significance as India's first mosque and its unique blend of Kerala and Islamic architecture. The serene atmosphere and the contrast between the ancient structure and the modern prayer hall are frequently highlighted. Some note restrictions for women in the main prayer area.

"Cheraman Juma Masjid is one of the most historically important mosques in India, located at Kodungallur in Thrissur district of Kerala. It is considered as the first mosque in India, built around 629 AD. It's build in old temple architecture with essential features of Mosque. It's a important tourist spot in Thrissur."

Lineesh A S

"This is said to be the first mosque in India, and you can really feel the history here. The structure still carries a traditional Kerala style which makes it look very unique and different from modern mosques. The atmosphere inside is calm and peaceful, and you get a sense of both spirituality and history at the same time"

Alshihab

"The Cheraman Juma Masjid in Kodungallur, Kerala (historically known as Muziris) is a truly remarkable and spiritual place — often regarded as the first mosque in the Indian subcontinent. It carries an incredible history, dating back to the early years of Islam.

According to historical accounts, after embracing Islam, Cheraman Perumal, the then King of Kerala, traveled to meet Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Sadly, he passed away in Oman while returning home. However, his nephew and accompanying companions returned to Kerala and established this mosque on the shores of the Arabian Sea.

The mosque was recently renovated by the Kerala Government, beautifully blending its ancient legacy with modern amenities. The renovation was thoughtfully done by referring to rare old photographs, preserving the traditional Kerala architectural style — with sloping tiled roofs and wooden carvings — while introducing modern facilities.

Below the historic structure, there is now a newly built underground, fully air-conditioned prayer hall with a capacity to accommodate around 1000 worshippers. Despite this modern addition, the charm and sanctity of the old mosque have been carefully maintained above ground. The structure above remains simple, serene, and deeply rooted in Kerala’s traditional design.

Tourists and history enthusiasts are welcome inside the campus, where you can walk around, admire the beautiful craftsmanship, and feel the weight of centuries of history. It's a surreal experience for anyone interested in cultural heritage, religious history, or architecture.

⚠️Important Note:As per the mosque committee's current rules, women are not permitted inside the prayer area.

Overall, Cheraman Juma Masjid is not just a religious site but a profound historical landmark — a must-visit for anyone exploring Kerala’s deep and diverse cultural history!"
