"Eden Gardens in Kolkata is a place every cricket fan dreams of visiting. Known as the “Mecca of Indian cricket,” this iconic stadium can hold over 60,000 people, and the energy here is simply electrifying during a live match. The roar of the crowd, the sight of cricketing legends on the field, and the sheer scale of the arena make it unforgettable. Even if you are not a huge cricket follower, stepping inside gives you goosebumps because of its history and atmosphere. Outside the stadium, the Eden Gardens park offers a calm contrast, with shady trees and a small lake perfect for a quiet walk. "Eden Gardens – The Mecca of Indian Cricket!
Located in the Maidan area near BBD Bagh, right opposite the Calcutta High Court, this is a legendary venue that resonates deeply with the soul of cricket.
I have visited the stadium five times, and among those, the first-ever pink-ball Day-Night Test match between India and Bangladesh left a lasting impact on me. The stadium, with an approximate seating capacity of 68,000, was packed to the brim that day. During the event, I had a brief conversation with a ground staff member who shared info that the boundary dimensions are approximately 66–68 meters on the square side and 76–78 meters on the straight side.
The stands inside the stadium are named after cricketing legends such as Sourav Ganguly, Pankaj Roy, and Jagmohan Dalmiya. The B.C. Roy Club House named in honor of former West Bengal Chief Minister Dr. B.C. Roy.
While attending matches, you might experience cellular connectivity issues due to the presence of signal jammers. However, vendors selling water and snacks are quite efficient. There are also food corners and canteens inside the stadium offering decent food, albeit at higher-than-usual prices.
One area that consistently falls short is crowd management. In my experience, the gathering process lacks professionalism. A stadium of such iconic status should ideally have more streamlined crowd-control mechanisms.
For your information I want to let you know that Eden Gardens is owned by the Eastern Command of the Indian Army and managed by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), whose headquarters are within the stadium complex.
To me, it isn’t just a cricket stadium, it’s a living monument to the sport in India. With a history spanning over 160 years, electrifying crowds, iconic matches, and a rich architectural legacy, it remains the heartbeat of cricketing culture and heritage in Kolkata and across the globe."
