Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Smaranika Tram Museum for its unique concept and affordable entry fee, offering a charming glimpse into Kolkata's tram heritage. While the collection is small, the experience of being inside a vintage tram with its historical exhibits and a small cafe is highly appreciated. Some note that the exhibits could be better maintained, but overall, it's considered a delightful and worthwhile stop for history buffs and those seeking unique Kolkata experiences.

"Hi..
Kolkata is the only city in India with a working, albeit declining, tram service.

Smaranika is a small cafe-museum set up a few years ago at the Esplanade tram terminal. It consists of a restored tram parked in its own enclosure. The front car has a few tiny tables where one can sip tea or coffee (and perhaps munch on biscuits or chips – there is a very limited menu). The rear car – which can be entered only through the front car – has a display of old photographs, a few old uniforms, old tickets and tokens, etc. The exhibits seem rather neglected and do not seem to attract many visitors except for diehard fans.

The ticket costs Rs. 20/- and permits you to stay there for 45 minutes – perhaps they want to discourage visitors from lounging there for too long! Incidentally, the ticket itself is designed to look like a tram ticket (see photo) and it serves as a souvenir of your visit. Also it's closed every Thursday.

Unfortunately they do not permit photography inside the museum space. But now it is permissible. However, I clicked a couple of photos outside the fencing, which I am posting here.

Thank You 😊"

"A very small but charming museum with a cafe inside, set up within an actual tram coach giving you the authentic feel of being inside a tram. It showcases the history of Kolkata’s iconic tramways through old tickets, passes, photographs, and other memorabilia. The collection isn’t very large, but it’s a delightful quick stop if you are nearby or interested in the city’s heritage tramways."

"I stumbled upon this place by chance and it was such a great find. It’s not a huge museum—it’s literally an old tram car turned into a museum, which is the coolest part! You step inside and it's like a time machine.

They have all these old photos, tram tickets, and little trinkets that show you the history of Kolkata's famous trams. It's so neat to see how the trams have evolved over the years. My favorite part was seeing the old conductor's uniform and ticket punchers. It just makes you imagine what it was like back in the day.

It’s a quick, charming visit and a peaceful escape from the busy city streets. If you have even a little interest in history or just want to see something unique, this is a perfect stop. Plus, the little cafe inside is a nice touch!"
