Timing is Key for Bird Sightings

While Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary offers serene nature, bird activity peaks between July and September, especially August. Visiting outside this window might mean fewer sightings, as one reviewer noted disappointment during a September visit. Early mornings or late afternoons are generally best for spotting birds.

Maintenance & Expectations

Recent reviews highlight concerns about the sanctuary's maintenance, with mentions of a broken watchtower and litter. While the natural beauty remains, manage expectations regarding facilities. The lack of entrance fees reflects its current condition, but the surrounding nature is still a draw.

Reviews Summary

Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary offers a serene natural setting with a peaceful river and lush greenery, making it a tranquil escape. While bird sightings can be inconsistent, especially outside the peak season of July-September, the natural beauty remains a draw. However, visitors should be aware of the sanctuary's current state of maintenance, particularly concerning the watchtower and general upkeep.

"We visited Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary on the 2nd of May 2025 and while we didn’t spot too many birds, the experience was still quite serene and enjoyable. It’s a peaceful little spot tucked away in nature, perfect for a quiet morning or afternoon escape.

The weather was calm and pleasant, with a cool breeze that made the walk around the area relaxing. The water level was quite good, and the river surrounding the sanctuary added to the beauty of the place. Though the bird population wasn’t high during our visit—likely because it wasn’t peak season—the natural surroundings and scenic view more than made up for it.

There’s a small watchtower that offers a decent vantage point of the river and the nearby trees. It would be a great spot during the migratory season when more birds are around. Still, the lush greenery, flowing water, and tranquil atmosphere made it worth the trip.

It’s a nice location for nature lovers, even if you’re not an avid birdwatcher. If you’re planning a visit, I’d recommend checking the best time for bird sightings—usually during monsoon months or when migratory birds arrive. Otherwise, it’s still a great place for some quiet time in nature."

"There is nothing to see there anymore. May be it was there before as the watch tower by the river is still standing tall. Unfortunately, due to climate changes the birds no longer come here. Instead of birds you can see cloth pieces or plastics hanging."

"This place should be aptly named a ‘Watch Tower’ instead of a Bird Sanctuary. The watch tower is broken and is in dire need of maintenance (Broken Steps, Rusted Grill, Holes in the roof to name a few.)

There is ample parking available at the entrance and the place is easy to locate, due it being on the main road. You can spend a few minutes here and watch a few beautiful birds on the lake, given that you come early in the day or during the sunset."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Bird Population

Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary is historically known as a significant nesting site for various bird species. Between July and September, particularly in August, the sanctuary attracts over 5,000 birds. Species like the Maiden Egret, Pied Kingfisher, Wooly Neck Stork, and Night Herons are commonly found here. The birds often choose the top branches of trees on the island, which is partially submerged by the Tunga River during the monsoon, providing a safe nesting environment. Reddit

However, recent visitor accounts suggest a decline in bird numbers, possibly due to climate change and past floods damaging nesting trees and drowning eggs. This has led to disappointment for some visitors who expected a more vibrant bird population. It's crucial for potential visitors to be aware that sightings can vary significantly based on the season and environmental conditions. Reddit

Despite the fluctuations in bird activity, the sanctuary's natural setting remains a draw. The presence of the Tunga River and the lush greenery contribute to a peaceful atmosphere, making it a worthwhile visit for nature lovers even if bird sightings are not abundant. Reddit

The State of Facilities and Maintenance

Recent reviews paint a picture of a sanctuary in need of attention. The watchtower, once a prime viewing spot, is described as broken, with rusted steps, a damaged grill, and holes in the roof. Visitors have noted a general lack of maintenance, with overgrown grass and litter being present. Reddit

There's a perceived lack of development and upkeep from the government and tourism department. Missing elements include proper compounds, clear name boards, office counters, and readily available forest guides. The absence of an entrance fee is seen by some as a reflection of the sanctuary's current condition. Reddit

Despite these concerns, the sanctuary's location on the main road and the availability of parking are positive points. The natural beauty of the river and surrounding vegetation still offers a tranquil experience, but visitors are advised to manage their expectations regarding the infrastructure. Reddit+1

Photography Opportunities

Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary offers a picturesque setting for nature photography. The riverbanks provide a serene backdrop, and the watchtower (though in need of repair) offers a vantage point for capturing the landscape and any visible birdlife. TikTok+1

During the peak nesting season from July to September, photographers can capture a variety of bird species, including storks and herons, in their natural habitat. The early morning and late afternoon light, often referred to as the 'golden hour,' can enhance the photographic appeal of the sanctuary, creating beautiful lighting conditions for both wildlife and landscape shots. TikTok

While a telephoto lens is recommended for capturing distant birds, a wide-angle lens can be useful for broader scenic shots of the river and greenery. Visitors should always be mindful of the environment and wildlife, ensuring their photography activities are respectful and non-intrusive. TikTok
