"Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, Mangalagiri

This temple is truly special — every time I visit Vijayawada, coming here is part of my trip routine. The architecture, the atmosphere, the devotion — everything about this temple of Lord Narasimha inspires peace and spiritual uplift.

🕉 Historical Story & Significance
• The temple foot-hill shrine (Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy) is said to have been installed by Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, during the Dvapara Yuga.
• Mangalagiri (meaning “Auspicious Hill”) is also home to Panakala Narasimha Swamy up on the hill. There are three Narasimha temples in Mangalagiri — the one on the hill, one at the foot, and another at the top.
• The temple has royal patronage going back centuries. There is an inscription from the Vijayanagara Empire era, including one from Krishna Deva Raya, confirming land grants and contributions made to the temple.
• One of the major architectural features: the East Gopuram (tower) is massive — built by Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu between 1807–1809, it has 11 storeys, is about 153 ft high and 49 ft wide.
• There are legends too: the hill looks like an elephant from all sides. There is a famous “milk tree” (Ksheera Vruksham) and myths that connect the hill to ancient sages and even a tunnel said to lead to the Undavalli Caves.

🙏 My Experience

Visiting the temple gives you this calm yet powerful feeling. The stone deities of Narasimha and Lakshmi Devi are impressive, the rituals are beautifully maintained, and the view from around the hill is very soothing. The temple is clean, the devotees respectful, and the sense of history is always present.

If you ever travel to Vijayawada or Guntur region, don’t miss this temple — it’s more than just a temple, it’s a journey into history, devotion, and peace."

"Mangalagiri – The Auspicious Hill

Mangalagiri means “The Auspicious Hill.” It is one of the eight sacred Mahakshetrams (holy places) in India where Lord Vishnu manifested himself — along with Srirangam, Srimushnam, Naimisam, Pushkaram, Salagamadri, Narayanasramam, and Venkatadri. The present Mangalagiri was known as Thotadri, where Goddess Lakshmi Devi performed penance.

Three Narasimha Swamy Temples

Mangalagiri is unique for having three shrines of Lord Narasimha Swamy:
1. Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy – on the hill.
2. Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy – at the foot of the hill.
3. Gandala Narasimha Swamy – at the summit.

Temple Timings

Panakala Narasimha Swamy (on the hill):
🕖 7:00 AM – Doors open & morning puja
🕢 7:30 AM–1:00 PM – Special Archana & Panakam (jaggery water) offering
🕐 1:00 PM – Maharnivedana
🕒 3:00 PM – Temple closes
(No evening Archana — it is believed gods and sages worship then.)

Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy (downhill):
Morning – 5:00 AM to 12:30 PM
Evening – 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Includes Theertham, Archana, Harathi, and Ghoshti sessions.

Highlights & Legends

In the Panakala temple, the deity’s wide-open mouth “drinks” the jaggery water, and remarkably no ants are found despite the sweetness.

However, now devotees are not allowed to pour Panakam directly into the Lord’s mouth. The temple authorities collect Rs 45 and provide vessels of Panakam as prasadam/theertham for devotees to fill their bottles. Earlier, visitors were allowed to pour it themselves.

Behind the temple lies a natural cave, believed to connect to the Undavalli Caves on the Krishna River. The hill itself resembles an elephant from every direction.

Downhill, the Lord’s garland of 108 Saligramams and the Dakshinavartha Shankham (a rare conch once used by Lord Krishna) hold great spiritual significance.
Nearby stands the Rajya Lakshmi Temple, whose Goddess idol is known for her serene beauty.

Gandala Narasimha Swamy (Summit)

There is no idol here—only a sacred spot to light a ghee lamp (Deepam). Devotees believe lighting the lamp removes sorrows and negativity; its glow is visible from nearby villages.

🎉 Festivals
• Brahmotsavam (Feb–Mar): Celebrated for 11 days with grand chariot processions, said to be started by Dharmaraja at Lord Krishna’s command.
• Other major festivals: Sri Rama Navami, Hanuma Jayanti, Narasimha Jayanti, Vaikunta Ekadasi, and Maha Shivaratri.

Architecture & History

The Gali Gopuram, built by Vijayanagara rulers and Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu, is 153 ft tall and 49 ft wide, among South India’s tallest temple towers.
The Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, believed to have been established by Yudhishthira, houses ancient carvings, relics, and intricate sculptures depicting epics.

Tradition & Belief

The temple is known for the Ksheera Vruksham (Milk Tree), believed to bless couples with children. During festivals, the entire town turns vibrant with devotion, music, and color—offering a glimpse of timeless Andhra tradition.

I can humbly say that Mangalagiri offers a deeply spiritual and visually captivating experience.
Whether for worship, history, or divine peace, these temples stand as living symbols of faith, devotion, and architectural grace."
