What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Rivona Caves are appreciated for their historical significance and peaceful atmosphere, offering a glimpse into ancient Buddhist and mythological pasts. While some visitors find the caves small and note the absence of original sculptures, others value the serene environment, the pleasant walk, and the nearby natural beauty like the cave waterfall.
"It is a small cave, but with historical significance. Can be skipped if you are a tourist and add it into your visit itinerary if you're someone into history and anthropology."
Hitha Nanjappa
"Small town, lovely roads, the stream by the caves is beautiful, the cafe itself is a small space but very beautiful and peaceful location to be at. Car goes upto the end and you'll have to walk down a few 10 metres to reach the cave itself."
Saloni Sikdar
"There is absolutely nothing here please don't waste your time coming here. There are 2 small cave like structures where Buddhist Monks used to meditate but all the sculptures which used to be present here have been taken away to the museum in Panaji. You can't see any inscriptions also on the wall so if nobody had marked this you wouldn't even know about it. The river nearby has dried up and they don't allow swimming there now as well so it was a complete waste of our time to come here."

The Ancient History of Rivona Caves
While the caves themselves are a testament to ancient craftsmanship, many of the original sculptures and inscriptions that once adorned them have been relocated to museums, notably the museum in Panaji. Despite this, the remaining rock-cut chambers, particularly the main meditation space, still evoke a sense of profound history and peace. Exploring these caves offers a unique glimpse into Goa's lesser-known historical and spiritual past, far removed from its popular beach culture.
Exploring the Natural Surroundings
For those interested in further exploration, the Usgalimal rock engravings are also located in the vicinity, showcasing ancient petroglyphs that add another layer to the region's historical narrative. The Netravali waterfall is another nearby attraction that can be combined with a trip to Rivona, offering more opportunities to connect with Goa's natural landscapes. These natural elements, combined with the historical caves, make Rivona a destination for those seeking a more immersive and less commercialized experience in Goa.
