"A Must-Visit Landmark in Shillong
The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians in Laitumkhrah is one of the most iconic and peaceful places in Shillong. Steeped in history, the Cathedral stands on the site of the first Catholic Church built in 1913 by German missionaries. Though the original structure was destroyed by fire on Good Friday in 1936, the current cathedral—built in the 1940s and consecrated in 1947—carries a strong legacy of resilience, faith, and beauty.
The architecture is strikingly modern Gothic, built on beds of sand to withstand earthquakes. Inside, the terracotta artwork and stained-glass windows—crafted in Germany and France—beautifully depict the life of Jesus Christ and various Biblical scenes.
Don’t miss the Grotto Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes and the Calvary Hill, where a life-size bronze crucifixion statue and the Stations of the Cross add to the spiritual atmosphere. It’s especially moving during Good Friday when special devotions are held here.
The Cathedral offers not just a place for prayer, but also a serene escape from the bustle of the city. Whether you're religious or simply appreciate art, history, and quiet reflection, this place is worth visiting.
Tip: Visit in the evening for a peaceful ambiance, and take a few moments to read the information board at the entrance—it gives rich context to everything you'll see."

"A very beautiful church with lots of history and many sayings. It has a double stored building type structure which is pretty good. Also, the color of the church matches with the sky and I heard somewhere this church can withstand earthquakes as well. They have made this church so beautiful. Before going, read about the history of the church and then go. There is a packing space also for vehicles on the top and there are some associations as well. It feels good to be there for some time."

"Most Beautiful Church in Shillong. A Soulful & Unforgettable Experience!
Even though I’m a Hindu, I’ve always felt drawn to peaceful, spiritual places and this church in Shillong truly touched my heart. It's beautifully built across a large area and has two levels both the upper and lower sections are stunning and calm.
The entire church is so picturesque that I couldn’t stop taking photos. Every corner was beautiful and serene. But beyond the beauty, what made this visit unforgettable was a very special moment.
I wanted to light candles as a prayer, but unfortunately, there was no shop nearby. I was a little disappointed. Just then, a local person saw me and kindly offered me a candle. When I tried to pay, he smiled and said,
"You’ve come to God’s house it’s free. Please take it."
That moment was so pure and touching. I’ll never forget his kindness it made my entire trip feel truly blessed.
This place is not just a church; it’s an experience of peace, humility, and connection beyond religion. Whether you're spiritual or not, this is a place you must visit in Shillong.
Highly recommended truly a must-visit! 🙏✨"
