Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Kurisumala Ashram for its profound serenity, breathtaking natural beauty, and unique spiritual atmosphere that blends Christian and Indian traditions. The peaceful environment and the simple lifestyle of the monks are frequently highlighted as deeply refreshing. However, some note the limited amenities and the need for visitors to be highly respectful of the quiet, contemplative nature of the site.

"A very serene devotional place as well as a busy agricultural farm near Vagamon. The brothers have been living there as a community for a long time with their small chapel, small dairy farm, and the pastures. Tourists used to come there to see it all, especially the large collection of cows. Gradually they started a milk processing and packaging centre. Now their milk is available in the markets nearby under the name "Kurisumala Milk". The chapel is so small and different where the brothers and sanyasis sit in meditation. There is a small cemetery there where the deceased inmates are buried."

"Kurishumala Ashramam is truly a serene retreat for those seeking a break from their hectic routines, offering a chance to find inner peace and spiritual insight through the presence of the resident monks. Nestled on a hill overlooking the picturesque Vagamon Kurishumala, the ashram was founded in 1958 by Francis Acharya, who is now laid to rest within its grounds. The ashram also maintains a dairy farm on the hillside, where cows graze freely among lush meadows and pine forests. The milk produced here is marketed under the name “Kurishumala Milk” and is distributed throughout the Idukki & Kottayam districts, maintaining its natural freshness.

Visitors are expected to remain calm and respectful during their time at the ashram, as the monks are often engaged in prayer and meditation. Creating a peaceful atmosphere is essential to preserve the sanctity of the place."

"Kurisumala Ashram, nestled in the serene Sahya Mountains of Vagamon, Kerala, is a Trappist monastery under the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. Founded in 1958 by Fr. Francis Acharya, a Belgian Cistercian monk, and Fr. Bede Griffiths, an English Benedictine, the ashram represents a harmonious integration of diverse spiritual traditions that bridge Eastern and Western monastic wisdom (Kurisumala Ashram Official Website, Wikipedia).

At its heart, Kurisumala is shaped by three interwoven spiritual strands:

Syrian Liturgy
Rooted in the rich West Syrian tradition, the liturgy celebrated at the ashram is poetic and deeply grounded in the language and imagery of the Bible. With its profound sense of the Resurrection, it offers a mystical and participatory experience of the divine. This liturgical form also reflects a gentle openness to Indian cultural expressions, embracing elements that resonate with the local religious ethos (Kurisumala Ashram – Spiritual Objectives).

Indian Monastic Lifestyle
Inspired by Indian ascetic practices, the life at Kurisumala is simple, nature-centered, and austere. The monks live in close communion with the natural world, practicing ecological sensitivity and inward silence. Their daily rhythm is shaped by meditation, organic farming, and a life of minimalism, reflecting the spirit of Indian sannyasa (renunciation) (Wikipedia – Kurisumala Ashram).

Benedictine-Cistercian Spirituality
The monastic rule followed here is based on the Cistercian interpretation of the Rule of St. Benedict, emphasizing a life balanced between prayer, manual labor, and contemplative study. The practice of Lectio Divina—a meditative, prayerful reading of sacred texts—is central to the spiritual discipline of the community. This blend of labor and liturgy fosters an atmosphere of deep inner stillness and shared devotion (Kurisumala Ashram Official Website)."
