Reviews Summary

Visitors find the location beautiful, especially in monsoon and winter, and appreciate its historical significance as a site of ancient Buddhist activity. However, the primary disappointment is the complete chiseling out of the original Ashokan Rock Edict, with many noting its absence and vandalized facilities.

"Beautiful location in monsoon and winter. Ancient ashok budhhist monuments but most are taken to museum by ASI for better preservation"

Praveen Singh Shekhawat

"The Asoka Rock Edict (probably the earliest) is gone! It is the right location: the huge boulder and remnants of the protective cage are still there, but the ancient inscription is gone. It looks like thievery or vandalism, but the indian government officials don't really know yet what happened. The inscription, which originally was not so deep and clear to begin with, was completely chiselled out. Also all benches trashcans and signs are vandalised and demolished.

It was to my knowledge the earliest edict of Ashoka before his true conversion to the Dhamma. Luckily there were rubbings made and you find pictures and translations in scholarly works.

Still worth the visit in my opinion, because there are some nice caves, boulders and charnel grounds for meditation and reflecting on the powerful buddhist presence once upon a time here in the ancient Bhairat kingdom."

Bhikkhu Thiracitto

"It's an unknown place, we got there randomly only by reading the board of Ashoka inscription yet it's an isolated and a bit dangerous place because of any unwelcomed animal. We were four people and we found no inscription there."
