What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Agung offers a profoundly rewarding, albeit extremely challenging, trekking experience. Hikers consistently praise the breathtaking sunrise views and the sense of accomplishment, often describing it as a 'wonderful' and 'unforgettable' adventure. However, many note the intense physical demands, the cold summit temperatures, and the slippery descent. A significant concern raised is the amount of litter found on the trails, detracting from the mountain's sacred beauty.

It is a sacred mountain that the Balinese people love and respect deeply.

"The view was breathtaking! We can see the Mount Rinjani from the summit.
Went there via the Edelweis Basecamp. For time and energy saving we can use ‘ojek’ (bike service) from basecamp for IDR 100K one way. The track to camp site was quite easy with only around 30 minutes to 1 hour from 1 point to another.
The challenging part was the summit. The slope of the track is about 45 degrees all the way to the first peak point. But is all worth the view!"

Most hikers start from the Besakih Temple area or Edelweis Basecamp. You'll typically need to arrange transport to the trailhead. Many guides can help coordinate this.
While technically possible, it's strongly discouraged due to the challenging terrain, potential for getting lost, and the sacred nature of the mountain. Guides are highly recommended for safety.

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
For families seeking mountain views without the intense climb, consider visiting the Taman Edelweis area which offers unique scenery and is more accessible. Alternatively, explore other family-friendly activities in Bali that offer stunning natural beauty without the extreme physical demands.
💰 Budget Travelers
To save money, try to form a group to share guide costs. Pack your own food and water instead of buying at the trailhead. While 'ojek' services can be convenient, walking where possible can also reduce costs. Look for guides recommended by local accommodations or trusted online forums to ensure fair pricing.
💑 Couples
Consider booking a private guide for a more intimate experience. Pack a small picnic to enjoy at the summit after the sunrise, creating a special moment. The shared effort and breathtaking reward make it a unique adventure for couples seeking something extraordinary.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Challenge of the Ascent
Safety First: Due to the challenging nature of the terrain, especially in the dark, hiring a certified local guide is almost universally recommended. Guides are invaluable for navigation, providing assistance on difficult sections, and ensuring your safety. They are also knowledgeable about the mountain's sacred status and local customs.
Preparation is Key: Hikers should be well-prepared with sturdy, broken-in hiking boots, warm layered clothing (as temperatures at the summit can be very cold), a reliable headlamp, plenty of water, and high-energy snacks. The descent, while seemingly easier, can be just as treacherous due to the slippery conditions.
A Sacred and Respected Peak
Cultural Sensitivity: When visiting, it's crucial to be mindful of local traditions and religious practices. Avoid loud behavior, and dress modestly, especially when passing by or through temple areas. The mountain's spiritual importance influences the atmosphere and the way it should be approached by visitors.
Environmental Stewardship: The reverence for Mount Agung also extends to its natural environment. Hikers are strongly urged to practice 'Leave No Trace' principles. This means packing out all trash, not disturbing wildlife, and generally leaving the mountain as pristine as you found it. Reports of litter on the trails highlight the ongoing need for responsible tourism.
The Enchantment of Taman Edelweis
A Photographer's Dream: Taman Edelweis is a popular location for photographers seeking distinctive shots. The landscape here can feel otherworldly, offering a softer, more whimsical backdrop compared to the volcanic terrain. It's a place where nature's beauty takes on a more enchanting form.
Accessibility and Experience: While the main summit climb is strenuous, areas like Taman Edelweis might be more accessible, sometimes even reachable with 'ojek' (motorcycle taxi) services from basecamps, making it an option for those who want a taste of Mount Agung's beauty without the full-scale expedition.
