Balinese have a deep reverence for temple grounds, seen as abodes of the divine. The customary practices surrounding temple visits are aimed at honoring and maintaining the sanctity of these sacred spaces. One such tradition involves abstaining from entering temples during times of bleeding, be it menstruation or an open wound, as a gesture of respect towards the divine energies residing there. Th...

Reviews Summary

Besakih Temple is revered as Bali's most important and holiest site, offering stunning views and rich cultural insights. While many praise the spiritual atmosphere and photographic potential, some visitors report negative experiences with aggressive upselling of guides, offerings, and souvenirs, leading to a feeling of being 'money-grabbed'.

"Temple was very nice and interesting. It's considered the most important temple in Bali and rightly so. Plan at least 1 hour here.

That said, I disliked my experience there due to all the money grabbing. I was happy to pay the entrance fee, however I really disliked the guide who rushed the whole experience. He brought us to buy offerings saying they were mandatory, then he kept asking us to buy drinks and statues from certain stalls which I guess were his friends. At the top temple he called over his photographer friend who tired everything to get us to buy a photo session. Finally at the prayer area, we were told to leave an offering, we left 100.000idr and the guide said it wasn't enough. On the way down the guide asked for money for his services, to which I replied it was included in the ticket price. His answer was just give me some small amount to get a drink or something.

Just remember
- offering is not mandatory, but it will allow you into the prayer area at the last temple
- guide is included in the ticket, any tip is up to you"

"One of the best things I've done in Bali! We got an amazing guide who gave us insight into temple life & the history of the temple, he took millions of brilliant photos and invited us to his house for dinner! We got on so well we exchanged numbers and stayed in touch.

We came just for sunset so had the temple to ourselves, learned a lot about the Hindu religion and got some of the best views of Bali ever. Highly recommend"

"This large temple is definitely worth a visit when in Bali. It is beautiful and very large. You buy your entrance tickets right after you park your car in the very large Carpark. Then you will get a guide assigned to you who will guide you through the grounds of the temple and explain the temples history. You might even have the chance to take part in a blessing.
Allocate enough time for visiting Besakih."

The Significance of Besakih Temple

Besakih Temple, often referred to as the Mother Temple of Bali, is the most important and holiest Hindu temple complex on the island. It's not a single temple but a sprawling collection of 23 separate temples, each dedicated to different deities and ancestral spirits. Its strategic location on the slopes of Mount Agung, Bali's highest and most sacred volcano, imbues it with immense spiritual power. The complex is believed to have been established over a thousand years ago, making it a cornerstone of Balinese Hinduism and culture. TikTokInstagram

The sheer scale and architectural diversity of Besakih are awe-inspiring. Visitors can explore numerous shrines, each with unique designs and intricate carvings, set against the dramatic backdrop of the volcano. The temple is a vibrant center for religious life, hosting numerous festivals and ceremonies throughout the year, which draw pilgrims from across Bali and beyond. Understanding its historical and spiritual context enhances the visitor experience significantly. Instagram

For many Balinese, Besakih is the spiritual heart of the island, a place where the divine is believed to be most accessible. The complex is organized into three main areas representing the Hindu trinity: Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver), and Shiva (destroyer). This cosmic alignment, combined with its ancient origins, makes Besakih a truly unique and profound destination for those seeking to understand Balinese spirituality. TikTok

Navigating Visitor Experiences: Guides, Fees, and Etiquette

Visiting Besakih Temple can be a mixed experience for travelers, with many highlighting the importance of understanding the local customs and potential financial aspects. While the entrance fee is standard, the role of guides can be a point of contention. Some visitors report having incredibly positive experiences with guides who provided deep insights and even helped with photography, while others felt pressured into buying offerings or souvenirs. Reddit

It's crucial to clarify what is included in your ticket price. Often, a guide is part of the package, but their services might extend to leading you to specific vendors or photo spots. While offerings are not mandatory for entry, they are required to enter the prayer areas at the highest temple. Visitors are advised to be firm but polite if they do not wish to purchase additional items. Reddit

Respectful attire is non-negotiable. Visitors must wear a sarong and sash, which are usually available for rent. Furthermore, Balinese tradition dictates that women on their menstrual cycle should not enter temples, a custom that some TikTok creators have highlighted. Being aware of and adhering to these customs ensures a more harmonious and respectful visit to this sacred site. TikTok+1
