What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Mahawu offers a scenic crater and panoramic views with an easy trek, appealing to those seeking natural beauty on a budget. However, many visitors find the site neglected, with overgrown trails and rundown facilities, leading to disappointment for some.
"Worthless, nothing to see nothing to do, the path is overgrown and you only can see the empty crater from the viewpoint. All the other sites are blocken by green plants. Watch out we booked a one way Grab, but when we wanted to leave 40 minutes later internet was gone and it was a hassle to get a ride back. Anyway you can skip it...... Face & Inst Tompie Limbo"

"Disappointing.
Neglected and overgrown.
I decided to go and see Mahawu Crater. Nice drive up hill to entrance. Car park for cars and bikes. 5k for person, 10k for car. Steps upto top of crater takes 5-10 minutes depending on fitness level. I took 7 with a couple of breather stops.
The handrail to the top is missing in places, and rusted out in other places.
The paved path goes all the way around the crater. I started my walk on the right hand path. Path is greasy and slippery in a lot of places. It goes up and down around the crater. There's a few places where you can see the crater and take photos.
As craters go, it's ordinary.
But if you haven't seen one then you may like.
Also you can see a town and lake on the other side of path. The path is mostly covered with at least 2 metre high vegetation. I had my hands up around my face diverting the foliage.
Half way around , when you come to an old concrete structure, the bush gets more intrusive.
Just push on, stick to the path.
It took me 25 mins walk around the crater path, with stops for photos.
I wouldn't divert from the path for a closer look as it looks risky, and it's a good drop down.
The crater itself is inactive, they say. There was a mild smell of sulphur when I initially got to the top of the steps. Nothing toxic.
Overall it was a good 40-45 minute workout from bottom to top and back again.
When I went it was overcast, not hot. But you definitely warm up when your on the path.
Take water with you.
Stick to the path.
It's a reasonable workout.
Area needs some work.
Couple of guys with weed eaters could probably clear the path in a day.
The handrail needs a bit more work."

"What appears to be a site that is no longer maintained. Very overgrown track and stairs up to the crater, so unable to walk all the way around now. View points with gazebos very rundown/ broken/ unsafe now. It’s a bit sad to see. But cool to visit to see the crater and panoramic views to other volcanoes and coast."
