Bevin Clare

"The "waruga" was a stone sarcophagus used by the Minahasan people of Indonesia, circa 1600-1830 CE. The deceased was placed in a squatting position under a personalized roof. Dutch authorities eventually banned them, claiming that above-ground storage would spread disease."

Sigit Purwadi HW

"30mn away from Bitung, on the way to Tondano lake, this minuscule grave site (1000 m2 max) is there to explain how local people (Minahasa) were disposing the bodies of dead people.
The deceased was placed in a squatting position under a personalized roof in a vertical stone coffin called "waruga".
Carved ornaments meant the social status of the dead. A coffin could content up to 12 bodies.
The "sarcophagus" were placed vertical high in the hill , as close to whatever gods as possible .
The Dutch then forbid that process for health reasons, fearing the decaying body fluids could spread disease.
Some of the graves were then brought to this little park, as a tourist attraction.
There are still hundreds of tombs in the hills, that are not in use anymore,.slowly being recovered by the jungle.

These tradition of placing bodies in a stone coffin are actually similar to what the Toraja still do, or what the Egyptian we're doing. The conenants have different shapes, but they are all made of stones, and placed above the ground."
