"Spanning the River Shannon and joining County Westmeath with County Roscommon, the Athlone Town Bridge used to have a swivel bridge but is now a fixed bridge. The Italianate-style bridge has Greek decorations and includes four arches. It is constructed of ashlar limestone.
The bridge was constructed between 1841 and 1845. It remains open for road traffic and there are pedestrian pavements on each side though they are not very raised."
