Reviews Summary

Hikers consistently praise Carrauntoohil for its challenging yet rewarding nature and stunning, albeit often misty, views. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching Ireland's highest peak is a major draw. However, the unpredictable weather and steep, rocky terrain require careful preparation and can detract from the experience if not adequately addressed. InstagramReddit

"Incredible. Cronins yard is the perfect spot for grub before or after the hike. It has showers, toilets, a cafe where you can get food and drink such as beer, a little souvenir shop and parking is only €2."

"It was my first time reaching the summit. Wasn't an easy one, took me more than 3 hours, but I've got no regrets, the views and the place itself was brilliant. Definitely recommend!"

"Amazing hike!! Not a frequent hiker but it took 3 hours to reach the summit and 3 hours back down. Can be very foggy/misty in the last stretch after Devil’s ladder so be sure to stay on track. The view’s are incredible and well worth the climb. Would recommend going down the zigzag path and not back down the rocky ladder. Nice cafe at the bottom with hot apple pie was a lovely treat :)"

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Climbing Carrauntoohil with children requires careful consideration of their age, fitness, and experience. While the summit itself is a significant achievement, the challenging terrain and unpredictable weather can be overwhelming for younger or less experienced children. Consider shorter, less demanding hikes in the surrounding Killarney National Park as an alternative or a stepping stone. TikTok

If you do decide to attempt Carrauntoohil, opt for the shortest and most straightforward routes, and always go with a qualified guide who has experience with families. In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Routes

Carrauntoohil offers several routes, each with its own challenges and rewards. The most direct and popular is via the Devil's Ladder, a steep, rocky gully that requires scrambling. This route is often favored for its directness but can be demanding. Another scenic option is the Heavenly Gates, which provides breathtaking views and a more dramatic ascent. For experienced hikers seeking a longer challenge, the Coomloughra Horseshoe Loop traverses multiple peaks, including Carrauntoohil, offering a full day of ridge walking and stunning scenery. TikTokInstagram+3

When choosing a route, consider the weather conditions. The Devil's Ladder, in particular, can become treacherous when wet. Many hikers recommend descending via the Zig Zag path or the 'Zig Zag' route as a safer alternative to descending the Devil's Ladder, especially in poor visibility. Always carry a map and compass, or a GPS device, and know how to use them, as visibility can drop to near zero very quickly. Reddit

For those less confident in their navigation skills or unfamiliar with mountain terrain, hiring a local guide is highly recommended. Guides can ensure your safety, provide insights into the local flora and fauna, and help you choose the best route based on current conditions. Instagram+1

The Importance of Weather and Gear

The weather in the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, where Carrauntoohil is located, is notoriously unpredictable. Even on a clear summer day, conditions at the summit can change in an instant, with fog, rain, and strong winds rolling in. Therefore, thorough preparation regarding weather and gear is paramount for a safe and enjoyable hike. InstagramReddit

Essential gear includes waterproof and windproof outer layers, as well as sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support and grip. Wet rocks and basalt stones can be slippery, so reliable footwear is crucial. Layers are key for managing your body temperature; start with a moisture-wicking base layer and add insulating layers as needed. Don't forget gloves and a hat, even in summer. Reddit

Beyond clothing, carry sufficient food and water. High-energy snacks like nuts, dried fruit, and energy bars are ideal. A first-aid kit, a fully charged mobile phone, and a headlamp (in case of unexpected delays) are also vital. Many hikers also recommend bringing walking poles for added stability, especially on descents. Reddit
