Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Skellig Michael as an unforgettable, awe-inspiring destination with breathtaking scenery and historical depth. The challenging climb and unique wildlife encounters are major highlights. However, the trip is highly weather-dependent, leading to frequent cancellations, and the boat journey can be rough, causing seasickness for some. Reddit

"Brendan and John Casey were outstanding tour operators. We booked 6 months in advance and were fortunate to have good weather for our trip. (If the weather forced cancellation of the trip we were assured a full refund, or at our choice we could possibly convert to a trip around the islands with no landing at all reduced price; this would be a good fallback option.) The island is a magnificent, unforgettable hike. Be sure to wear proper footwear and clothing, including a rain jacket and hat that won’t blow off, and take water and snacks as there is none on the island. (There is a pit toilet.) If you have vertigo, fear of heights/exposure, or reduced mobility you may choose not to hike the full 600 exposed, ancient steps to the top, but if you’re careful and take your time most people can do it. This was an absolute highlight of our Ireland trip."

"Absolutely fantastic tour that you must do if you swing by Skellig. The islands are just breathtaking, even from afar. And the boat driver was really nice.
Be wary : even on a calm day, you might feel sick because of the motion while heading to the island."

"I couldn't recommend this tour enough! We were meant to do the Landing tour, however due to an ongoing legal case not related to the company, the tour had to be switched to the Eco boat tour. Nonetheless we all enjoyed the tour. There is free parking at the port near the tour meeting point, which was easy to find. The boat felt spacious since they only took on 12 passengers per boat. It left on time and took just over 2 hours for the whole journey. The staff are knowledgeable and shared plenty of interesting information about the islands. We even were lucky enough to spot dolphins, which came up close to the boat!"

The Journey to Skellig Michael

Reaching Skellig Michael is an adventure in itself. Access is solely via boat tours departing from County Kerry's coastal villages like Portmagee. These tours are highly dependent on the Atlantic's temperament. Even on a 'calm' day, the sea can be choppy, leading to a potentially queasy journey for some. Reddit It's crucial to book your tour well in advance, as landing spots are limited and highly sought after. Many visitors recommend booking 6 months ahead, especially for the coveted landing tours. Instagram Be prepared for cancellations; weather is the ultimate gatekeeper to this remote island. Reddit

Many tour operators offer an 'eco-tour' as a fallback if landing is impossible. This provides a fantastic opportunity to circumnavigate the islands, marvel at the dramatic cliffs, and observe the abundant birdlife, including the iconic puffins, from the water. TikTokReddit This alternative still offers a memorable experience and a chance to appreciate the sheer scale and beauty of the Skelligs. Instagram

When choosing a tour, consider operators known for their knowledgeable crew and safe practices. Some reviews highlight the crew's enthusiasm and expertise in sharing local lore and wildlife information, enhancing the overall experience. Reddit

Climbing the 618 Steps

The ascent to the monastic settlement on Skellig Michael involves climbing approximately 618 ancient, uneven stone steps. These steps are exposed, steep, and lack modern safety railings, demanding careful footing and a good head for heights. TikTokInstagram Visitors are strongly advised to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots and to dress in layers, including waterproof and windproof outerwear, as the weather can change rapidly. TikTokReddit A hat that can be secured is also recommended to prevent it from being blown away by the strong Atlantic winds. Reddit

While the climb is challenging, it's achievable for most people with moderate fitness levels. Taking your time, pausing to catch your breath, and enjoying the increasingly spectacular views is key. Reddit For those with severe vertigo, a fear of heights, or significant mobility issues, the full climb might be too daunting. However, even if you don't reach the very top, the lower sections of the island still offer incredible scenery and a sense of history. Reddit

Remember to bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities on the island. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit, where the ancient monastic cells await, is immense and makes the challenging climb entirely worthwhile. Reddit
