"A Hidden Jewel of Ancona’s Heart

Chiesa di Santa Maria della Piazza is an absolute gem for anyone visiting Ancona. This beautiful Romanesque church, with its stunning white stone facade and intricate carvings, feels like stepping into a quiet sanctuary of art and history.
Built over ancient early Christian and Byzantine ruins, it holds centuries of spiritual and architectural secrets beneath your feet - some of which you can actually see through the glass floor panels inside. The interior is simple but elegant, creating a peaceful atmosphere perfect for a quiet moment of reflection.
Standing here, you feel deeply connected to the layers of history that make Ancona so special. Whether you love architecture, hidden historical corners, or just enjoy exploring authentic local treasures, Santa Maria della Piazza is a must-visit."

"We stumbled upon this treasure. The old church has beautiful carved stonework outside and the inside is very simplistic, but the secrets it holds of roman mosaics beneath is something not to miss. It is undergoing renovations and work on the tower and roof outside. The church does hold a couple of stunning relics in a glass case and has a beautiful wooden vaulted ceiling. Their are glass panels in the floor scattered around where you can see the mosaic remains and you can walk down the steps and round the excavations to view the mosaics up close under the arches beneath the church floor. Some are in lovely details and colours and their is also wall art. It is only a small display so wont take you long. You pay by giving a donation."
