"Port'Arsa in Benevento is one of the most precious remnants of the city's ancient walls. Built in the Lombard era, this gate was one of the eight main entrances to the medieval city and is today the only one remaining intact after the others were demolished between 1865 and 1868. Its name is linked to the nearby kilns, where stone blocks were transformed into lime.
Port'Arsa marks the entrance to the Triggio neighborhood, one of the oldest areas of Benevento, characterized by narrow streets and architecture that recount centuries of history. The entire wall was commissioned by the Lombard prince Arechi II, who fortified the city, making it an important defensive bastion in southern Italy. The gate, built with materials reused from Roman buildings, retains traces of its ancient function of surveillance and control of passage between the city and the outside world.
Strolling around Port'Arsa is like stepping back in time, to an era when Benevento was a cultural and political hub. Although the area is now partially choked by traffic, the gate's historical and symbolic importance remains undisputed, representing a monument connecting the ancient Lombard city with the present.
Its defensive function was also linked to the nearby Ponte Leproso and the Torre della Catena, with which it formed a strategic fortification system. Port'Arsa, therefore, is not just a physical gateway, but a gateway through which one can access one of the most fascinating chapters in Benevento's history."

"Port'Arsa is the only surviving gate, besides the Arch of Trajan, of the Lombard walls. The gate began to be built in the 6th-7th century, in the late Roman era. There were eight gates originally, Porta Somma near the Castle (it was later incorporated into the Rocca dei Rettori), Porta Rettore, Porta Nuova, Porta Gloriosa and Porta San Lorenzo, all demolished between 1865 and 1868. In the surroundings other points of historical interest."
