What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Church of San Francesco for its beautiful village setting and the artistic value of its interior, particularly the 18th-century Baroque elements and the works of noted painters. The historical significance, including the 'Sermon Stone' linked to St. Francis, is a major draw. However, some note the facade's simplicity and the challenging staircase access.
"Most beautiful church"
Jan Vos
"Beautiful village"
Olivier COISSARD
"You enter Bevagna through Porta Cannara and then a not very long but easy staircase leads us to the presence of what, when you see the facade, seems to be a medieval church.
The interior modifies this intimate sensation, since the architecture denotes rather an eighteenth-century taste of late Baroque sentiment.
The pictorial decorations that dot and adorn the altars of the single nave and the dome are nevertheless works of very high artistic value.
We do not know whether the altarpieces were painted following a commission from those who took care of the furnishings or of late realization and added to embellish the interior.
The artists who worked on them are today completely unknown to non-experts and their fame was well known instead when they received the commission.
Dono Doni, Spacca and Appiani are the illustrious painters who have left the mark of their expressiveness in this beautiful church of Bevagna and the visitor has the opportunity to admire the sign, the lines and the colour of their respective compositions."
