Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Civic Tower as an iconic and essential landmark in Bormio's historic center. Its presence in Piazza Cavour is described as a timeless guardian, with its clock and historical significance adding to the town's charm. While it cannot be climbed, its visual grandeur and role in local history make it a highly appreciated sight.

"A classic Italian clock tower you simply can’t miss in Bormio. It rises above Piazza Cavour, acting like a quiet guardian of the historic center. Its functional clock still marks time both visually and audibly, giving the town a timeless rhythm. The tower dates back to the Middle Ages and once served as a bell tower and public watchtower. It was named after the large bell “Bajona” that used to hang inside. You can't climb it today, but it’s impressive enough just looking up from the square. A perfect landmark for exploring the old town. :)"

"The Torre delle Ore (Clock Tower)—or Civic Tower—is an imposing 14th-century bell tower that dominates the heart of the historic center, becoming a symbol of Bormio in the central Piazza Cavour.

Also known as the Torre della Bajona, it takes its name from the large bell whose extraordinary size once called the population of the town and surrounding valleys to gather in the Kuerc (the square) to attend Council meetings and actively participate in the town's administration. It also marked the life of the people, the patron saint's celebrations, and events of threat and danger.
Furthermore, the Tower marked the ancient city walls and, along with 31 other towers in the surrounding area, served as a defensive system.

Legend has it that, while ringing forcefully to warn the town of the impending invasion of the Visconti troops, the Bajona fell from the bell tower and shattered. Legend aside, the bell was actually destroyed following the Visconti invasion in 1376, and the bells that ring today were cast from that single, extraordinary bell.

Damaged over the centuries, restored, and partially destroyed by the fire of 1855, it still survives today, with its reassuring grandeur and its fully restored façade, where a sundial (hence the Torre delle Ore) and the ancient coat of arms of the municipality of Bormio are visible."

"It is one of the symbols of Bormio.
It is an ancient tower (perhaps dating back to the 13th century) with a clock on the facade (hence the second name, "Tower of the Hours"...) and which once had an enormous bell (the Bajona...)
that was rung to warn of danger or for meetings.
It dominates the Piazza del Kuerc."
