"A sacred place rich in history and works of art. Anyone visiting Campobasso cannot miss it."

Rossella De Rosa

"Built in 1572, this church has provided for the needs of Campobasso's poorest since its inception. The works inside are among the finest examples of Baroque art in Molise. With a single nave, the walls feature four wooden altars covered in pure gold. Two altars feature paintings by Francesco Guarini, who lived between 1611 and 1651. He was a student of Massimo Stanzione (one of the greatest exponents of Neapolitan Caravaggism) and the teacher of Angelo Solimena, father of the famous painter Francesco Solimena. The first altar on the left, dedicated to Saint Benedetti, features a painting of the saint exorcising a possessed friar, with a Pietà on the cornice. On the right, nine small paintings tell the stories of Saint Anthony the Abbot, to whom the altar and the 16th-century wooden statue are dedicated.
The church features frescoes on the walls by Michele Scaronia, a painter from Campobasso who lived in the 18th century, whose sister married the famous sculptor Paolo Saverio Di Zinno, author of the Mysteries and the statue of Saint Francis preserved in this church."

Antonella Ciaramella

"An interesting church with beautiful altars and frescoes in the Baroque style...open during the day..."
