Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the beauty and tranquility of Castel Gandolfo, particularly the expansive Barberini Gardens and the historical significance of the Apostolic Palace. Many highlight the stunning views of Lake Albano and the peaceful escape it offers from Rome. Some find the journey a bit long and wish for more direct transport options, while others note that ticket prices can add up, especially with guided tours.
"I first learned about Castel Gandolfo, the Pope’s summer residence, from Robert Ludlum’s novel The Road to Gandolfo in the early 1990s. At the time, I imagined it as a distant and sacred place that only a select few could enter. Decades later, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Pope Francis opened the Papal Palace to the public in 2016.
During a trip to Rome in the midst of the pandemic, I finally had the opportunity to visit. Having watched The Two Popes shortly before, I arrived with a sense of what I might see — yet nothing prepared me for the experience. The Papal regalia, the private chambers, the artworks, and the gallery of Popes all brought centuries of Catholic history to life before my eyes. The square in front of the palace is charming, and the view over Lake Albano is breathtaking.
Visitors should allow enough time to explore the gardens as well as the palace itself. Transport is straightforward — we took a car service from Rome — and while we were able to buy tickets upon arrival, it’s worth booking ahead during busy periods like the Jubilee year.
It was a remarkable and memorable visit that blended history, art, and a unique glimpse into the life of the Papacy."

"Beautiful summer house. If you are in Rome just take the train 30 mins away and you will arrive to one of the most breathtaking views you will ever see. Going up to visit the palace where the Pope spends summer time you will be able to get an amazing view of Lake Albano. The palace and gardens are very nice, make sure to get the audio where you can enjoy listening to the history of popes and the palace ,very informative. Very calm place away from the busy city."

"May 2025. Large museum with a lot of art and displays related to the history of the papacy. You also get to see the actual rooms and offices used by the pope."
