Reviews Summary

Palazzo Biscari is a stunning example of Sicilian Baroque architecture, praised for its opulent interiors and unique staircase. While some areas show signs of age and may require restoration, the historical narratives shared by guides, often descendants of the original family, add immense value to the visit.

"Ok but once fully renovated and the paintings have been cleaned it will be a better place to visit.
Guides available if wanted and price concession for over 65's.
Signs of decay on ceilings and paintings discoloured from smoke from the two fireplaces in the main hall. This hides a lot of the fine details in most of the paintings.
A visit takes about 30 minutes."

"You can choose between visiting on your own (EUR 7) or a guided tour (EUR 10). I recommend to attend the guided tour (Italian and English available). No waiting times."

Thorsten Thomas Maier

"Once they have the time and money to restore this Palazzo it will be a great place to visit.
The ceilings are finely painted but there is evidence of water ingress.
The paintings could do with some expert cleaning to make them more vibrant. Sadly they have suffered the ravages of time and smoke from the two fireplaces in the main hall.
Pity as it has a great history."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Allure of Sicilian Baroque

Palazzo Biscari stands as a magnificent testament to Sicilian Baroque architecture, a style that flourished in the region following the devastating earthquake of 1693. This architectural movement is characterized by its dramatic flair, ornate decorations, and a sense of theatricality. Unlike its mainland Italian counterpart, Sicilian Baroque often incorporates more vibrant colors, intricate stucco work, and a playful use of curves and volutes, creating a unique and exuberant aesthetic.

The palace's facade, designed to be seen from ships arriving at the harbor, showcases this opulence. Inside, the richly decorated interiors feature elaborate frescos, gilded stucco, and mirrors that amplify the sense of grandeur. The famous German poet Goethe, who visited the palace, was captivated by its beauty, though he focused more on its antique collections than the Baroque artistry itself. Instagram+1

Visitors often highlight the unique staircase as a standout feature, describing it as an 'explosion of whimsical Sicilian baroque.' This architectural element, along with the stunning ballroom, truly embodies the spirit of the era, offering a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the noble Paternò Castello family who built and inhabited the palace. Instagram+1

A Glimpse into Noble Life

Palazzo Biscari offers a fascinating window into the lives of Sicily's aristocracy. Originally built by the Paternò Castello family, who held the title of Princes of Biscari, the palace was a symbol of their wealth and status. The sheer scale of the palace, with its numerous rooms, speaks to the grandeur of noble residences during that period. Instagram+1

Guided tours, often led by descendants of the family, provide intimate historical narratives that go beyond mere architectural descriptions. These guides share anecdotes and stories, bringing the history of the palace and its inhabitants to life. They might even show you the more practical, less glamorous aspects of the palace, like the historical toilets, adding a touch of relatable humanity to the opulent surroundings. Reddit

Today, Palazzo Biscari continues to be a venue for significant events, from cultural concerts to exclusive weddings. This ensures the palace remains a vibrant part of Catania's social and cultural landscape, allowing new generations to experience its historical charm and architectural splendor. TikTokInstagram

Preservation and Ongoing Restoration

While Palazzo Biscari is a treasure, some visitors note signs of decay on ceilings and paintings, attributing discoloration to smoke from fireplaces. This suggests that ongoing restoration efforts are crucial for preserving the palace's intricate details and vibrant artwork. Reddit

Reviews indicate that the palace's beauty is somewhat masked by the effects of time and environmental factors. Expert cleaning of the paintings and addressing water ingress in the ceilings are mentioned as areas that, once improved, would significantly enhance the visitor experience. Reddit

Despite these challenges, the palace remains a worthwhile visit for those interested in Baroque architecture and history. The potential for future renovations promises an even more dazzling experience for visitors in the years to come, ensuring this architectural gem is well-maintained for future generations. Reddit
