Reviews Summary
Visitors are consistently impressed by the Ponte Bisantis Viadotto Morandi, hailing it as a masterpiece of Italian engineering and a symbol of Catanzaro. Its immense single arch and monumental scale are frequently praised, with many calling it one of the most beautiful bridges they've seen. While its imposing presence is a major draw, some may find limited direct access or amenities on the viaduct itself.
"A+++++"
Santi Caltabiano
"This viaduct, besides being a testament to Italian engineering genius, is the largest single-arch bridge in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. Designed by the brilliant engineer Riccardo Morandi in the late 1950s, it provides easy access to the city of Catanzaro from the airport or any other direction, spanning the Fiumarella stream in a single leap.
It is imposing and majestic with its immense mass. The arch is 231 meters long, longer than TWO FOOTBALL FIELDS! It is 112 meters high.
Seen from below, it is impressive due to its enormous arch, which was built of continuous reinforced concrete (unlike today, where everything is prefabricated).
It was built in just 3 years (1959-1962).
You can see it from everywhere.
It has become the symbol of the city of Catanzaro.
Following the collapse of the Genoa bridge, it was closed and underwent major maintenance work. It is now accessible again.
I quote the words used by Professor Morandi to describe his masterpiece:
"A particularly expressive work of art, among the most modern possible, designed with monumental criteria, without the aid of unnecessary decoration.""

The Engineering Genius of Riccardo Morandi
Morandi himself described his work as 'a particularly expressive work of art, among the most modern possible, designed with monumental criteria, without the aid of unnecessary decoration.' This philosophy is evident in the viaduct's imposing and majestic presence. Its height of 112 meters above the Fiumarella stream is a striking feature, and its construction was a crucial development for connecting Catanzaro, enhancing accessibility and solidifying its role as a symbol of the city.
The bridge's structural integrity and design have been subject to scrutiny, particularly following the collapse of other bridges. However, after undergoing significant maintenance and safety checks, Ponte Bisantis has been confirmed as safe and remains a proud landmark. Its enduring presence is a testament to Morandi's engineering prowess and its importance to the region.
