"Genoa's carruggi, the beating heart of the old city, offer a timeless charm and a true immersion in local history and culture. Strolling along these narrow, winding streets, you feel transported back in time, where every corner tells stories of the sailors, merchants, and residents who once populated this splendid port city.

The carruggi are characterized by a myriad of colors and sounds; the historic buildings, with their stone facades and decorated windows, create an atmosphere that is both charming and welcoming. During my visit, I appreciated the small artisan workshops and local food shops offering typical Ligurian delicacies such as Genoese pesto, focaccia, and traditional sweets. You can stop for an excellent mortadella sandwich or farinata at the small kiosks dotted along the alleys.

A stroll through the carruggi is also an unmissable opportunity to discover hidden corners and welcoming piazzas. Places like Piazza San Lorenzo or the small Piazza dei Draghi offer perfect moments of respite from the hustle and bustle.

The evening lighting lends the carruggi an even more enchanting atmosphere; the soft lighting creates shadows that make the experience even more evocative. It's the ideal place to photograph architectural views or simply lose yourself in thought while immersed in the vibrant nightlife of the local bars and trattorias.

However, it's important to keep in mind that the streets can be narrow and uneven; comfortable shoes are recommended! Some visitors may find the labyrinthine layout disorienting, but there are always signs to help you find your way.

"With its 113 hectares, it is one of the largest medieval historic centers in Europe and the most densely populated. Genoa's historic center is a maze of alleys (caruggi) that unexpectedly open onto small squares, often linked, like the churches overlooking them, to important noble families. The spirit of Genoa resides precisely in its alleys, where different smells, flavors, languages, and cultures have always blended. And the historic center, more than any other part of the city, has always been a melting pot. In these narrow spaces, squeezed between the hills and the sea, the pride of wealthy Genoese merchants and nobles built splendid residences, where works of art were collected and preserved for centuries, still visible inside some of the palaces, now museums open to the public. In this compact cluster of buildings, where the windows of the houses are so close they almost touch, architectural styles overlap: the medieval wall forms the foundation of a fourteenth-century building, Gothic loggias are now transformed into trendy venues. In Genoa's historic center, the past forms the foundation of the present. In this place where time seems to have stood still, noble palaces and splendid churches alternate with workshops that have been in business for over 100 years, where specialties are still prepared according to ancient recipes and artisanal objects are crafted according to centuries-old traditions. Genoa is a city full of historic shops, and even the names of its streets often recall a past linked to artisanal activities and guilds, such as Via degli Orefici or Vico del Ferro. Those who look up at the intersections will appreciate the magnificent votive shrines donated by the ancient guilds to illuminate the streets at night.
