What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors describe the Church of San Francesco as a 'very nice' and 'beautiful place,' highlighting its spiritual significance and historical depth. The church is noted for its role as a center for local religious traditions, particularly the Tuesday evening Masses and popular novenas.
"The church, formerly dedicated to Saint Stephen the First Martyr, took the name of San Francesco in 1267, when it became the seat of the eponymous convent of the Friars Minor Conventual (now the seat of the Municipality), which was suppressed in 1809. The church is home to the Confraternity of Santa Maria del Suffragio. Holy Mass is celebrated there every Tuesday evening (the Tuesdays of Saint Anthony), as it is connected to the church of Sant'Antonio da Padova, also home to the confraternity of the same name. The novenas of Saint Barbara, secondary patron saint of Isernia, are very popular in both June and December, as is the thirteen days of Saint Anthony in June. The processions of Saint Barbara and Saint Anthony depart from this site each June."
