What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Convento dei Cappuccini Maratea for its profound sense of peace, serenity, and spirituality. The beautiful church art and the tranquil garden are frequently highlighted as major draws. Some note that it's a place best appreciated with time for quiet contemplation.
"Convent of the Capuchin friars founded in Lauria 1617. It was the seat of the Novitiate and it was there that friars and religious figures worthy of veneration were formed, such as the Venerable Mons Nicola Molinari and Blessed Domenico Lentini, who used to stop in the friars' library to draw notions and give teachings to the young. Miraculous events also occurred in the church, with Blessed Angelo of Acri as the protagonist, who came to Lauria to preach. He was enraptured in ecstasy while celebrating the Holy Eucharist under the astonished gaze of all those present. The church, dedicated to St. Anthony, houses a painting depicting the Blessed Angelo d’Agri (1878), a wooden sculpture of St. Francis of Assisi from the 19th century, the high altar in polychrome marble from the 19th century surmounted by a polyptych on canvas attributed to Ippolito Borghese (17th century), enriched with inlays and gold decorations, which represents the Ascension of the Madonna into heaven with the retinue of Angels. In the garden of the convent a shrine contains a majolica panel, dated 1891, dedicated to the Saint of Assisi, rich in Franciscan details."
