The parish church of Maratea, the historic center, has been in the center since 1434, when it was emancipated from the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of San Biagio al Castello and, for this reason, was called the "Mother Church." It was built on an original nucleus dating back to the 13th-14th centuries, which has undergone numerous modifications and expansions over time, giving it its current appearance. The most significant was achieved by combining a tower, transformed into a presbytery, and the adjacent chapel of Santa Maria into a single structure, thus becoming the single nave that still characterizes the building today. The marble plaque, located near the baptismal font, would appear to attribute these works to Mercurio Greco in the early 16th century. In the 18th century, the church underwent further transformations: a new wall was added to the original internal façade, constructed in the Baroque style that still characterizes it today.
Description The original nucleus arose in the 12th-14th centuries, taking up the name of the church of Santa Maria al Castello. In 1434, it separated from the parish of the Basilica of San Biagio, and since then it has been the main parish of Maratea. In 1505, expansion works were carried out, gradually bringing the church to its current dimensions. The large bell tower, with a rectangular base and octagonal elevation, in a clearly Romanesque style, probably also dates back to this period. During the 18th century, a tower was incorporated into the church's choir, which today forms the presbytery. The church suffered considerable damage in the 1857 earthquake."
