Visitors often find the Church of San Francesco to be an impressive and historically significant site, particularly appreciating its legendary founding and preserved artworks like the 14th-century crucifix. "Impressive place with a good chi"
Henry Winecourt
"According to legend, the Church of San Francesco in Massa Marittima was founded by Saint Francis himself while passing through the Maremma region. Originally, the church was considerably long, built in the style of the mendicant order. Due to the soft soil, its length was reduced over time to one-sixth of its original size.
However, the simple church contains several treasures, including a 14th-century wooden crucifix, paintings by Raffaelo Vanni (Saint Cerbone and Blessed Messetani), and stained-glass windows by Alberti Ceppi."
Gernot Berndt
"This church, commissioned by Saint Francis himself during his journey to Maremma in 1200, has been reduced in size several times due to stability problems. Its current appearance is due to modifications made in the 19th century.
The interior is rather bare, but it preserves a valuable wooden crucifix from the 14th century."
