What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Museo Tommaso Campailla as a well-curated and deeply moving historical medical museum, particularly highlighting the impactful 'stoves' and the passionate guidance. While often closed for restoration, those who visit find it an essential and enlightening experience that sheds light on Modica's significant contributions to medical history.
"A well-curated and well-organized museum. My friends and I had Dr. Calabrese as our guide, who explained everything to us in great detail, and for this we are grateful. He took us on a journey into the past of our Modica, a city we had never known before. Entering the room where the stoves are located had a profound effect on us. We almost felt like we could sense the pain and anguish of the people undergoing the treatment. Everything is as it was then, thanks to the tenacity of Professor Valentino Guccione, who fought to ensure it was valued and displayed to the public. Without his expert work, we would never have known all this. I recommend everyone visit the museum, as it is a moving and interesting experience."

"I thought it was a medical museum in the general sense, but it was actually the hospital where syphilis was treated and where the cure was discovered. Between 1600 and 1950, it was the center where people from all over Europe came for treatment. The researcher leading the tour lightened the subject while still making it very clear. Perhaps we should visit it to realize how important medical research is!"

"According to tourist information, it is expected to be closed until next summer, so it will probably be open again in summer 2026, otherwise it will be interesting"
