"The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Martyrs (11th-12th century), run by the Franciscan Friars Minor, is the most venerated church in Molfetta. Due to its remarkable dedication to the cult of Mary, it was elevated to a Minor Pontifical Basilica in 1987. The neoclassical structure consists of a central nave with a ceiling decorated with recessed plaster rosettes and two side naves separated from the central nave by enormous columns. Inside, on the marble high altar, is kept the Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary, which, according to tradition, was brought by the Crusaders. Here we also find the statue, at eye-level, which is carried in procession every year (September 8th), concluding with the characteristic "sea festival." At the foot of the statue is a votive lamp perpetually fueled by oil donated annually, on a rotating basis, by the parishes of the city of Molfetta. In the presbytery, note the characteristic monolithic altar, the pulpit, and the baptistery. Behind the high altar is a 19th-century walnut choir. In the left transept of the high altar is a faithful reproduction of the Holy Sepulchre (1503) with a marble statue of the Dead Christ inside. Above the entrance door is the beautiful monumental organ. Adjacent to the Sanctuary, crossing the cloister, you can admire the Ospedaletto dei Crociati, dating back to 1095 and perfectly preserved. It consists of three corridors of pillars supporting the arches that support the vault."
