"Beautiful easy walk from the town centre of Monselice uphill with a view on the Euganean Hills area.
We’ve been there in December and the sunset was spectacular!"

Claudia Mondini

"Serene small church with easy walk up. Inside the church are remains of many saints in glass coffins 😱😱"

Lawrence

"Strangely calming place compared to the rather over bearing and slightly touristy Venice. It has some similarities to places like Caernarfon in the UK. We walked up Citadel Hill (Chiesa di San Paolo) and reached St Grancis Exedra with great views over the town and surrounding valley. It is not quite clear what you are seeing unless you do pre research. It was well worth the climb although it would be difficult if you have mobility issues. However lovely little Italian shops including a tasty Gelato shop near the very friendly Visitor Information Centre."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Design of the Seven Chapels

The Santuario delle Sette Chiesette, or Jubilee Shrine of the Seven Churches, is a unique spiritual complex designed by Venetian nobleman Pietro Duodo. He envisioned it as a miniature Holy City, with six chapels meticulously crafted to mirror the seven major Roman basilicas. This architectural endeavor was intended to offer pilgrims a condensed spiritual journey, evoking the sacredness of Rome's most important churches within the serene landscape of Monselice. Reddit

Each chapel, though small, holds significant symbolic meaning. Walking through them provides a contemplative experience, connecting visitors to centuries of religious devotion. The Via del Santuario, the path leading to these chapels, is itself an integral part of the design, guiding visitors through a landscape that blends natural beauty with spiritual architecture. The entire complex is a testament to Duodo's vision and the enduring appeal of religious pilgrimage. Reddit

Exploring the Euganean Hills from the Shrine

The Santuario delle Sette Chiesette offers more than just spiritual reflection; it provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Euganean Hills. As you ascend the Via del Santuario, numerous vantage points reveal the undulating landscape, dotted with vineyards and ancient villages. The St. Francis Xavier Exedra, in particular, is a celebrated spot for soaking in these vistas. Reddit

Visiting during sunset transforms the experience, casting a warm, golden glow over the hills and the town of Monselice below. This makes it an ideal location for photographers and anyone seeking a moment of natural beauty and tranquility. The easy walk from Monselice town center makes these stunning views accessible to most visitors, offering a perfect blend of cultural exploration and natural appreciation. Reddit

Architectural and Artistic Highlights

Beyond the symbolic chapels, the Santuario complex boasts several notable architectural and artistic features. The Church of San Giorgio, situated at the end of the Via del Santuario, is a significant structure housing various relics. Adjacent to it stands Villa Duodo, a 16th-century residence built by the noble Venetian family who conceived the shrine, offering a glimpse into the historical grandeur of the region. Reddit

Another key element is the 17th-century St. Francis Xavier Exedra, a striking stone staircase adorned with statues representing the Four Seasons. This exedra not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also serves as a prominent viewpoint. The Church of Santa Giustina, a Romanesque-style church built in 1256 along the road, further enriches the historical tapestry of the site with its single nave and internal artworks, including a sixteenth-century statue of St. Giustina.
