What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Travelers praise the Minimetrò as a genius, efficient, and inexpensive solution for accessing Perugia's historic center. Its modern design respects the medieval cityscape, and frequent departures minimize wait times. Some users note that finding the Pincetto station's access points can be a bit challenging on maps.
"The top/ most eastern terminal of the wonderful and helpful Pincetto-Minimetrò is hard to find on Google Maps.
It does in fact have various access points up here but it is not easy to find them on GM.
If you use the keyword “Minimetrò” (or without the grave, thus “Minimetro”) you should have success.
This will reveal all the six(?) access points to this 5(?) km cable car (for that is what it is).
However, at the top end there are various levels at which you can enter from the neighbouring urban area.
There is an “Ascensore Minimetrò” which starts down on Via XIV Settembre, it seems (I did not take it but saw it from the top). It may be closed and the entrance below is covered in graffiti and rather neglected.
There are walkways/ paths for the young and/or fit from Piazza del Pincetto and Via della Rupe.
There are also escalators going up from various levels and streets.
It is all a wonderful architectural and engineering feat but lacks somewhat in customer/ user friendliness detail regarding access.
For instance, this morning I wanted to take the Minimetrò from the easily-accessible carpark at Pian di Massiano to the top, and thence to the National Archaeological Museum (q.v.), but found it hard on GM to calculate the route and walking time.
I had been on the Minimetrò only once before, with locals from Trevi (and even they had trouble finding the bottom of the Minimetrò from the carpark), so I knew it was a good route/ strategy.
I managed to work out that it was a seven minute walk … perfect!"

"An ideal way to travel in Perugia. The mini metro' takes you to the city center in just a few minutes. Stop at Pincetto and you can start enjoying the center of Perugia !"
Vince Agius
"An efficient way to transport people up to this hill top town from down below. The mini metro in Perugia is a single line system which runs from close to the main railway station to the Pincetto stop up top, which is close to the main attractions and square of this beautiful hill top town. The mini metro trains are very frequent, and a very inexpensive way to travel up and down the town. These are single coach trains and holds limited number of people, but we did not encounter crowding at all."

The Engineering Marvel of the Minimetrò
The design cleverly utilizes the city's natural topography. It connects the lower areas, including the vicinity of the main train station, to the elevated historic center. This is crucial for a city built on steep hills, making it significantly more accessible for tourists and residents alike. The stations are designed to be unobtrusive, often featuring escalators and elevators that blend into the urban landscape.
Travelers often express surprise and delight at the system's efficiency and how seamlessly it operates. The frequent departures and short journey times mean that getting from the base of the hill to the heart of Perugia is a matter of minutes, a stark contrast to the strenuous climbs or complex parking searches one might otherwise face.
Navigating Perugia's Hills with Ease
For those arriving by car, the advice is to park in the lower areas, such as the Pian di Massiano car park, and then utilize the Minimetrò to reach the city center. This strategy is highly recommended by locals and seasoned travelers alike, as it bypasses the limited and often expensive parking within the historic walls.
The Minimetrò's accessibility extends to its ease of use. With frequent trains and a straightforward ticketing system, it’s an intuitive way to move around. This makes it particularly appealing for day-trippers or anyone looking to maximize their time exploring the city's many attractions without expending excessive energy on the climbs.
