In the area, other important remains are found and among them there’s surely the harbors of Claudius and Trajan (Fiumicino). Here a curious attraction can be seen: the “colonnacce” (literally, ugly columns) of the emperor Cla...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the incredible preservation of Ostia Antica, particularly the Piazzale delle Corporazioni with its unique mosaic guild signs. The site offers a vivid glimpse into Roman city life, from public baths to the theater, making it a highly recommended day trip from Rome. Some note that mosaics are covered in winter, and the theater's observation point may be closed for restoration.

"Amazing! This was once the corporate complex of Ostia Antica that included the theater. It was an open shopping forum. You can't visit the archeological site without finding this treasure.

The mosaic guild signs for each storefront are very well preserved. You can pretty much see what each store offered just by looking at the floor designs displayed at the entrances. You'll also see great views of the theater as you're walking along the square.

The observation point at the theater was closed due to restoration in May 2025. I totally recommend viewing the entire complex from the top of the theater when it reopens.

Do plan your trip before or after the winter months. The mosaics are covered during that time to protect them. They were all uncovered during our visit in early May."

"Great to see Roman city life so easily, you walk and walk, climb stairs and see everything for yourselves. It was a city of around 50.000 people and around 17.000 of them were slaves. You can easily recognise the communal baths and toilets to theatre and merchant places. Should be at your 10 great things to do around Rome list. Also great for kids because you can see everything for yourself, our kids loved it. Kids have free entrance and the fee for adults was only €8 in 2016. You can easily spend 4 hours here, so take something to drink and food with you. But there is also a nice place to eat something."

"Beautiful open space with scattered statues, eerily beheaded and de-limbed. Relaxed here for a little while before exploring the rest of this beautiful city."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Piazzale delle Corporazioni: A Hub of Commerce

The Piazzale delle Corporazioni (Square of the Guilds) was the vibrant commercial center of ancient Ostia. This vast rectangular area, measuring over a hundred meters on its long side, was once lined with porticoes that housed offices for various trade guilds. It was designed as an integral part of the city's infrastructure, functioning in tandem with the nearby theater. The most striking feature of this square is the remarkably preserved mosaic floors at the entrances of each former guild office. These intricate designs served as visual advertisements, clearly indicating the trade or service offered within, such as shipping, pottery, or even exotic animal trade. Reddit

During the Roman Empire, Ostia was a crucial port city, and the guilds played a vital role in managing trade and commerce. The mosaics here provide invaluable insights into the economic activities of the time, offering a glimpse into the daily operations of these ancient businesses. Some mosaics even depict scenes of goods being transshipped, highlighting Ostia's role as a gateway to Rome. The square's design, with its porticoes and central temple (now largely gone), was a model for similar commercial centers established later in the Empire, underscoring its architectural and organizational significance. Reddit

Visitors today can walk through the Piazzale and marvel at the detail and preservation of these ancient advertisements. It's a unique opportunity to connect with the practical, everyday life of Roman citizens and understand the complex network of trade that sustained the empire. The proximity to the theater also suggests that public life and commerce were closely intertwined in this bustling Roman city. Reddit

Exploring Ostia Antica: Beyond the Piazzale

While the Piazzale delle Corporazioni is a major draw, Ostia Antica is a sprawling archaeological park that offers a comprehensive look at Roman urban life. The Theater, adjacent to the Piazzale, is remarkably intact and offers stunning views of the surrounding ruins when the observation point is open. Imagine attending a play or performance here thousands of years ago! Reddit

Beyond the commercial and entertainment hubs, you can explore the communal baths, such as the Baths of Neptune, which feature impressive mosaics and demonstrate the importance of public hygiene and social gathering in Roman society. Wander through the Decumanus Maximus, the main street of the ancient city, and discover residential buildings like the House of Diana, offering a glimpse into domestic life. The site also includes numerous shops, taverns, and warehouses, painting a vivid picture of a thriving port city that once housed around 50,000 people. Reddit

Navigating Ostia Antica is an immersive experience. The site is extensive, so wearing comfortable shoes is essential. Many visitors recommend dedicating at least half a day to truly appreciate the scale and detail of this ancient city. The ruins are well-preserved, allowing for a tangible connection to the past, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in Roman history. Reddit
